Adding detail to a curved Sub-D surface

So this is probably semi-advanced. I'm working on a sci-fi piece but I can't seem to get the detail I want on a curved surface without distorting the actual surface.

Example:
I want to cut out a portion of a conical cylinder and extrude it inwards but when I do that it starts to change the shape of the cone when i turbo-smooth. Even more so when I start to add loops to harden the edges on the inward extrusion.

This is for a normal map, so there's no particular reason this should be on the same mesh. I just figured this particular part would be intuitive to build up from the same object.

There's also the small thumb of the part of the concept I'm working on. It's from Dave King's sketches/concepts.
