Planescape: Torment should be like baldursgate 2? been looking for it but never found.
Torment runs on the same engine as Baldur's Gate - Infinity, and the basic gameplay is more or less the same. The difference - Baldur's Gate is an RPG with a story built around it. Torment is an elaborate, existential story with some RPG stat manipulation which is used more for buffing your characters speech abilities than combat skills. As long as you know what you're getting yourself into - a game with an enormous amount of reading, you'll love it. There never has been and very likely never will be a game that tells a tale like Torment does again.
- Deus Ex
- Populous
- Magic Carpet
- Syndicate Wars
- Herzog Zwei
- Final Fantasy VII
- Twisted Metal
- Warhawk I
- Xevious (completely solidified my idea to work in games)
- Mortal Kombat I & II
- Myth/Myth II: SoulBlighter
Oh man, I had totally forgotten about Magic Carpet, Vassago. Yeah, I had loads of fun on that - it was a game which gave you a great feeling of power, flying over your minions in your castle that keeps growing in size, killing giant creatures and other magicians
Little big adventure 1 and 2
Another World
Flashback
Alien breed tower assault (coop)
SECRET OF MANA 3 PLAYERS COOP !!!!!
Street fighter 2
Unreal 1
HL2+episodes
The legend of Zelda (NES, both quests), Ocarina of time & Majoras mask
Homeworld
Dead Rising (for me one of the best games of this generation)
Oh my god! Noone posted the Gothic series? I strongly advise you all to play Gothic I or II. Graphics aren't that good, game is not very optimised, controls take awhile to get used to, but I didn't even have time to look at all those things because the atmosphere it creates is simply amazing, you have to play it to believe it! I played it 3 times over I think. Best game I played in my life so far.
- Wolfenstein 3D
- Doom
- Halflife
- Ico
- Metroid (The original. One of the best platformers to this date, imo)
- World of Warcraft (say what you will....I think everyone should atleast experience it. there's a reason it's destroying lives. >:] )
- Everyday Shooter
- ANYTHING MUTANT LEAGUE!
I love you guys, this is exactly what i wanted and more! (way more, how on earth am i going to play ALL of them )
thanks a lot! looks like i have some catching up to do :P.
most of the classics are listed. I've seen no mention of ultimate underworld though (I only played the sequel.)
That's keeping in mind that this thread has become a list of games that were good "back then", as most of the games listed here are absolutely awful to actually play nowadays, including magic carpet.
I still play Syndicate from time to time, it's aged very gracefully.
That's what I love about the old LucasArts/Lucasfilm adventure games. Thanks to ScummVM they are still just as playable today as they were back then.
Shadow of the Colossus
Diablo 2
Warcraft 3
Asherons Call
Quakeworld CA and TF
Of course many of these are based on their release date. The games that have had the most impact on me back in the day have been dune 2, warcraft 1, wolf3d + rise of the triad + doom + quake.
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Crash Bandicoot
Deus Ex
GIANTS
Age of Empires 2

MediEvil
Parasite Eve 2
Pandemonium
Rayman
Silent Hill 2
Star Wars: KotoR 1 + 2
crap, i forgot to mention X-COM UFO Defense. that game rocked. too bad it's a pain in the Ass to get working on a computer now days. game still rocks though.....it is really freaking hard. I wish someone would remake this game for the PC or DS. not a sequel, just a remake of the original, Bionic Commando Rearmed style.
and another game i think everyone here should play is orbital (GBA game made by Nintendo)....just to realize how great a game can be even when all the graphics are circles and dots and you only use two buttons. One button pulls you towards the closest big object and the other repels you from that object. yet the game still rocks.

Yesss thank you!! You've heard of it!!! Such a superb game. Not as well known as it SHOULD be, that's for sure. Seriously, as if claymation isn't already a hard enough medium! Making it into an amazing game too? Genius.
Now for me... hmm, I'll try not to post anything that's already been said:
-How about the Devil May Cry Series? No love for it? (And no, we're not including the second game installment)
-Kingdom Hearts 1 &2
-Myst (Because it was one of the first games I seriously played, and because some of those damn awesomely hard puzzles still get me. And because the two son's rooms still scare me in each Age. And of course, cause of it's grand awesomeness.)
-And finaly I'll add The World Ends With You. Because that amazing stylized little game has been sucking at my soul for the last couple months and I've been enjoying every minute of it. (DS game by Square Enix, fyi)

Commander Keen
GoldenEye
NoOne Lives Forever damn that was so great
Ocarina of Time
God of War I+II
@rebb: they destroyed the series with that unreal based shooter, that was soooooo crappy
huh, i had heard of UFO: Aftermath and Aftershock, but not Afterlight.....and it's apparently available on steam. Might end up getting that. Kinda went over my budget on games recently though. Gonna have to wait on that.
Assassin's Creed is far from a "must play," in my opinion.
Lots of good games here. Most of mine have been mentioned, but a few of my favorites...
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Metroid Prime
- Half Life 2
- Baldur's Gate 2 (and Throne of Bhaal)
- Unreal Tournament 2004
- Planescape: Torment
- Super Smash Brothers (Melee for me, but they're all fun)
- Warcraft III
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
- Mario Galaxy
i enjoyed playing halo co-op in the same way I'd enjoy any game playing with a mate. As a standalone experience, I really don't get the fuss. it's one of the best shooters on the xbox, sure, one of the best on pc? no..
Final Fantasy VII and XII. Those games fucked my social life. VII still endures as the best game I've ever played, and XII is my current beanbag-and-coffee game for killing a few hours when I'm not busy (plus I got it for a tenner in a supermarket because some moron priced it wrong. Wonderful). Super Smash Bros Brawl is currently destroying my cerebral cortex with its insanity, and Zelda - Phantom Hourglass on the DS is wonderful, too, as is TWEWY.
Kingdom Hearts 1+2, Zelda - Twilight Princess, the Soul Calibur series and Jet Set Radio are still staples of my collection, too.
Sonic 2 and 3 with Sonic & Knuckles - This is the Sonic the Hedgehog opus.
Street Fighter II (I didn't see this one mentioned. Surely I must have just missed it.)
SimCity 2000
Warcraft 2
Skate or Die 2 for NES, if only for the title music and the half-pipe.
TMNT the arcade game.
The Simpsons arcade game
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (the arcade one, not the SG version).
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out for NES. Or the non-Tyson one. Whichever.
Spider-Man (the Neversoft one for PS1)
Wii Sports
Lemmings
Earthworm Jim 2
A Boy And His Blob for NES
The Adventures of Willy Beamish and at least one Sierra adventure game like Police Quest 3, King's Quest VI, or some Leisuresuit Larry. (If you're not in the habit of saving your work often, Sierra adventures will recondition you.)

Willy Beamish was great! Rise of the Dragon and Heart of China (by Dynamix as well) were also cool. Frustrating as hell sometimes but classic adventures.
There have been many games listed, but the only one that I'd consider great enough to be a must play before you die would be:
-Betrayal at Krondor-
Betrayal at Krondor (in the context of what it brought to the table for its day in age) is a masterpiece. (Don't bother with the sequel: Return to Krondor). It is also abandon ware and free to download. Gripping story by a masterful author, great music, best graphics for its time, best character development, hours upon hours of game play, practically non-linear, awarded best RPG that year. I still pick it up at least once a year and play through the game. It had a lasting impression on me and introduced me to the works of Raymond E. Feist.
