Hehe, I wouldn't. The "controversy" you talk about was just born from ignorance and misconceptions, and really didn't have anything to do with the game itself. You'll just get sorely disappointed

ye-eee-ah, i had flashback in, but took it out again ... remembered at the last minute that it committed the cardinal sin of getting easier the further you got in.

But it is one of the very very few games that made me feel genuinely tweaked when i first saw it, let alone played it

Halo. The first one. Yes, I'm serious. Play it, more than once, on all difficulties, with a friend. I'm firmly convinced that anyone who claims to not like Halo but doesn't dislike the genre in general simply hasn't played enough of it. It's a strange game in that it starts out kinda disappointing and gets better the more you play it. Once you and your friend have worked all the little facets of gameplay out and have started to find your roles in the coop campaign, things just keep better and better.

Other than that... damn, usually I'm great at this, but I can't think of anything right now!

Jet Set Radio Future and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath rank extremely high on my list, but they're not MUSTS...

Um...

I'll just mention Chrono Trigger again. Only traditional JRPG I've ever bothered to finish, and I wanna play it again!

I'll second Ico and Shadow of the Colossus although I don't really consider them video games in the traditional sense. They are interactive journeys/experiences.

The Max Payne games are a bit of alright and nobody seems to have mentioned them yet.

Something else I am really interested in (not out yet though so probably doesn't qualify)...

But Carmageddon, oh man! I had a hankering a few months ago and ordered all three. In a perfect world, the burnout guys would get their hands on that IP.
