i think GH3 will have been the last GH game i buy. especially if it keeps going with the Pontiac or whatever stages, Ax Body Spray guitars, and dramatic changes to characters (aka Judy Nails' plastic surgery/implants and DoA boob physics).
RockBand let me do the one and only thing that I like to do in games.....save up points and buy shit. I could care less about anything else either game does.

Yes. Not to bash folks who worked on GH3... but the art was a little all over the place.
Some characters were good. I thought the skinny blonde chick was well done. Everybody else.... not so much. Some of the animations were odd, too. The drummer was really stiff. And I wish they'd paid attention to where the the hand placement actually is on the fretboard during the songs. And during the fast HO/PO sections their strumming hand would just go berserk. I mean, yeah, you could pick each note if you wanted, but it's more wrist action.
Mocap or grab reference. For the few number of characters that need to be animated there's no reason why the animations can't match up to the actual guitar playing. Rigs/animations could easily be shared across the board, too. They're all bipeds.
For the masses of people that buy and play the game I'm sure they don't notice or care. But it just seems like one of those things where you're "well... we have all this time to animated a few characters. let's do something really nice."
Yeah?
I'll have to fire up Rock Band again and check out the animations. But from what I last remembered they were pretty natural looking. I'm sure the fret hand moves up and down the neck, too. This is what made me pay attention to the GH stuff.
The visual style is down to preference. I think they both have a cool looking style. One a little more gritty than the other. RB's style is pretty cool... but jesus christ does everything have to have fucking bloom? Honestly.
And yeah... saving up money and buying shit FTW. I love doing that in games. Even if it has ZERO gameplay impact... the fact that replaying the game over and over again (on top of just getting better at it) allows me to have the mind numbing goal of acquiring more shit is awesome.
Creating those assets and making them all fit together is a total pain in the ass to do. Points to Harmonix.
Rock Band's song list was horrible IMO and their songs are either far too easy or annoying to play. The songs in GH3 combined with the engine made for a much much more fun experience. I don't give a crap usually about company politics, just about how good the game is.
