FBX, its a file format that all Autodesk apps can use. Well Maya, Max, Motion Builder, already have it, Mudbox will in the next version.
FBX also has a quicktimeVR plugin that allows you to view FBX files in quick time, as in watch animation and explore the scene with nothing more then Quicktime. It lets you switch to different cameras saved in the file, and move the camera around in the scene.
Some obj problems in Max 2009 are still the same, the scale problem is still present (always tweaking with numbers), and ngons seems not to work too when exporting.
Fbx export does not work properly within Modo, you put Y or Z axis on the exporter to FBX, and you always need to rotate all the scene. Attach all geometry to a cube in the scene is always needed to solve all problems in Max...
Exporter/importers in Max are a not good enough. To be exporting/importing constantly is a waste of time. Max should be able to read .ma files... at least the geometry. Integration using .objs and .fbxs... that's not integration. bah, ignore me
An important thing that should be added is a good 3dpaint.
I use obj for everything too, regardless of which app I'm using. Max, XSI, Maya, Silo, ZB, Mud, UVLayout - doesn't matter. It works so I keep using it.
haha Yeah I was going to go over it again and see if I could find anything like that. Another user posted similar info from Dave. I think I'll be upgrading most definitely. And probably dumping my modo license as a result, since that's all I keep it on my hd for at this point.
If it supports texture painting on layers I will be very happy... Did anyone else get an email from autodesk about the beta? I've found them very slow to respond (after they emailed me with the code to request access to the beta) but hope to try it out soon.
Anyone else checking the site hourly for the trial to download?
I'm really excited about this app. I heard the release is to be October 6th. Any time now, hopefully.
[edit] Spacemonkey: It does support layers from what I saw, but I checked the image formats it accepts and I didn't see psd, so not sure if it will be fully photoshop compatible.
thats how it was when i showed it on the gamesconvention, when i have the time i'll get the latest build as i'm showing it on another convention later this week, but i guess i won't find the time and will have to check it right there
From what I've heard, the beta is still very buggy. It'd be nice if they got those ironed out and release today, but that's not what it sounded like to me.
Overall I'm very impressed. The performance is a night and day difference from the old Mudbox. I'm especially enjoying the smooth-as-silk feeling of the brushes. The only negative so far is zooming in and out which is quite jerky at higher levels.

go to Preferences>Files and set enable preprocessing on load to 1. It should solve the jerkiness
ok ive just literally opened it, first impression is im blown away by the speed increase. Now I think mudbox 1 ran a bit slower than it should but this is waaaay superior
i mean I had jerky performance on 2m, right now im doodling away on 8m with no slowdown.
edit: it feels like i got a new pc! wee
how you get the ao and DOF working? if I try load the bin things it says no something or other found
edit: had a doodle with texture painting, so far verdict is useful, but you won't be using it for skinning any time soon except for blockout. it has that same thing I've found in maya, that if you paint a big dark splotch, and then paint over it with a blue brush on low opacity, you can colour the surrounds blue and tint the dark bit, but unless you raise the opacity you can never fully paint over the dark colour- even if you go over it countless times
Only problem is that you can not open mudbox 1 files with the trial.
export the lowest level and import the highest level as a layer, works
wish it would be that easy with zbrush files, w ould love to interact more between both
I couldn't install the 64-bit version on my 64-bit XP system, the install window would appear for a fraction of a second only to disappear, so I'm using the 32-bit version.
My kneejerk impression is that I'm apparently very set in my ZBrush ways, and it's going to take a while to get used to Mudbox again, if I decide to stick with it.
Is the interface supposed to freeze for about a second every time I do something, such as rotate the camera, or make a stroke? This happens regardless of it being a 10 polygon mesh I'm working on, or a 4 million polygon mesh.
My ATI Radion HD 2900 XTX 512 doesn't seem to support that Ambient Occlusion feature, even with latest drivers, etc, but it doesn't seem vital. The previously mentioned problem is the 100% showstopper for the time being.
Mighty impressed with the performance boost to say the least. Didnt play much with the new stuff yet (altho AO doesnt seem to be working here either), was enjoying pushing this many polys in mudbox too much
But is it only me or that human basemesh behaves funnily ? It causes slight mouse lag with symmetry on ?? (symmetry = I mean automatic mirroring of the brush strokes along X,Y,Z) I can sculpt it relatively smoothly at 8million with no symmetry on. With symmetry on I got a 1sec mouse lag after each stroke with a 100K (Lvl 3) mesh.
The strange thing that with Tangent symmetry there is no lag at all even at higher levels (Lvl 6). Also, couldnt reproduce this lag on any other meshes symmetry or no symmetry.
I'm having continuous freezings too (with the x64 version), on first level of detail.. really annoying. It's impossible to work with this program on my machine, and i have installed the last drivers for my wacom and graphic card :S.
Edit: Using the full body object, i reached level 7 without problems (33m), 47-80fps, but same problem as at level 1. Is a pity not to work smoothly , freezings all the time.

almighty_gir: you want to load a scene file to simply work on a mesh? I heard they fixed obj support in Max2009.

Shiny metal wolf-head? Excellent.

are you srys? I didnt see that info

stuttering , sticking. no ambient occlusion on my hardware ati 4850, amd x2 4400
I'd gladly re-install my nvidia 7800 gtx if anyone has the same and has had better luck?
sad sad day.. :poly141:

do you have the latest driver for your grafix card?

edit: oh, now lets see.. merge down layers.. merge down layers... WTF? i have to save all 5 if i want one image?
boo
