I have a environment scene

Its a bathroom, and there is supposed to be a mirror with a reflection on it. I can get the reflection when I turn Raytracing on... but then that messes up the rest of the scene.

How do I get it so that I can get the mirror reflection on?

any insight would be greatly appreciated!

you want reflection in a still render ? or in the view port ? or in your game engine ? an does it have to be dynamic or can it be a pre-calculated one ?

reflection in a still render in Maya.

It can be either or... I'm just going for the look.

When I'm done with it completely I'm going to plop it in Unreal 3.. but for now just a maya render

    What renderer are you using?

Mental Ray should allow you to use scanline for rendering but raytracing for "secondary effects". If you are using normal Maya software well.. I've never really used it :p

You should post some images too so people can see what you actually mean.

basically that mirror above the sink is supposed to be able to cast a reflection

Surely you just apply a material with a "reflectivity" value greater than zero (blinn or phong should have this i think). I'm pretty sure just doing that and then using the Software renderer or Mental Ray will produce reflections.

dumb question: Is there actually anything that can be reflected?

don´t forget to enable raytracing in the mental ray rendering properties if you decide on using it...

OH! Now I know.. if I recall correctly Maya materials have a reflectivity of 0.5 by default. So you gotta turn it off for everything. Actually I don't know if it is default but it happens when I import geometry from other packages so I assume it is default.

So ya.. turn on raytracing and turn the reflectivity down on everything else to 0.

Groovy thanks for the tips, I got it working!

I'll post an updated shot as soon as I finish tidying up some other things.

Also... what do you people think overall about my scene? Any critiques would be greatly appreciated

It seems a little too big which I think is a common mistake. The toilet seems out of proportions too.. the thing that holds the water has a really odd shape I think. Maybe there are toilets like that (you wouldnt believe all those weird designs that are out there).

A crappy room like that needs to be cramped I think. Also the bigness makes it feel empty. Also the weird writings on the walls are really weird. haha. not sure if it intended cause it seems like a small kid went pscyho after his first day in school and started to maniacally doodle on the walls.

Something else Im not sure about is if the toilet is a little too low.. the toilet paper is definitely too low.

haha I "LOL'ed" about that part with the kid going psycho on his first day at school.

I'm playing around with the proportions right now. And I agree.. the room does seem too open. I shall make it more cramped... will post updated picture by tonight.

I appreciate your critique thus far and invite you to keep an eye on my forum to offer any more insight you may have
