3ds max conversion help

Quick noobish question for anyone willing to help -

I made some models in 3ds 9, sent them to myself to use in class on 3ds 8 - had no problem opening them up and editing them. However, when I went to send the models back (to open back up in 9) I get an error and cannot open them.

Is there some sort of conversion issue between the two versions? If so, is there anything I can do to convert?

Thanks in advance. I just want to work on my stuff :(

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have been able to open the Max9 file in Max8. In general, Max files are not backwards-compatible.
I find it very strange that you could send a Max9 file to Max8 successfully, but fail to bring a Max8 file into Max9 (since they do tend to be forwards-compatible).

I'd recommend exporting your scene to FBX, that will have the most chance of preserving as much data as possible.

    Aren't you mixing up Max8 and Max2008?

Heh, if that's true, it would explain the problem. The FBX solution would still be applicable.

Ah yes sorry, you're right about the 2008 - I just knew they were running a different version and got 8 and 08 confused (doh).

Thanks for the advice MoP - I tried using FBX converter, however it doesn't appear to allow any sort of conversion for .max files.

edit: Sorry I didn't make this clear right off the bat - I was hoping to do a conversion without access to 2008. Is that possible?

what are you talking about!? FBX IS A DIFFERENT FILE TYPE! It's one that will retain most of your data, and allow you to transfer back to Max 9. In max 2008, just goto Export, then select FBX from the file type drop down.

Yes I know, sorry if I wasn't clear - I mean the FBX converter does not appear to allow conversion from .max to FBX. Just 3DS/DXF/OBJ or DAE to FBX

edit: Oh sorry I understand what you mean now. The problem is I do not have access to the computer with 2008 on it, so I was hoping to do some sort of conversion at home.

no, you have to export as FBX from 2008, then take the FBX file home, and import it into Max 9.

    Sorry for the confusion.
