Starting late, work/life has been kicking my ass lately. *Hopefully* banging out the low-poly and casting normals tonight. Textures Sunday. The intent is to eventually fully mod this into HL2 or TF2, so I'll either do painterly stylization or realism (or both, just not for this comp!)-- crits & opinions welcome. Hopefully I can receive some of the crits in time to make any necessary/suggested changes.

    I know its sort of a mute point to critique how this gun probably should be changed to make it so it can actually be held- but, ...im not :P

    I realized late in the making that it didn't have grips so I added them in places that didn't hurt the overall design and felt alright in my pretend firing stance. Left hand palm-up, right hand palm down with a thumb button for firing, (you should be able to tell where the grips are, they look like bicycle handles). I figure it could harness on as well, but I just decided to keep it simple and go with grips since a harness would probably be part of the character it is attached to. I suppose since the handles are merely stuck-on geometry they can be changed at any point in the duration of the project if need be. Maybe I'll draw up or model how it is held for my portfolio, maybe even for the competition if I have the time to finish at all! (though, EQ said in the spec to ignore hands so never mind that). I really hope I can finish, I'm around halfway through the low-poly model and I have to work 12 hours tomorrow :\

    it fires chinchillas! thats too cool for school! The see through pipe reminds me of a hamster cage with all those funky pipes and wheels in it! Nice idea, really refreshing :)

    Thanks for all of the supportive replies. I dipped out of work a little early to get any extra time I could, still worked 11 hours though. Up since 5am and no sleep so far, I really hope I can finish this off-- time to put on some coffee. It was quite a struggle to get this design down to below 7000 tris (everything was so damn round!). I have a feeling some of the detail will suffer due to the initial complexity, but the basic forms (and the spirit of the gun) are present. I need to unwrap now... C/C welcome & appreciated
    frubes - yes, its hamster tubing, and it may just be pink, blue or some other funky color once we're done! :)
    MoP - I figured it could be its own HUD. It might create a much more enveloping experience if done properly. You sort of just see when you're out of ammo with this gun-- no more chillas in the tube, time to find more, or pick up the spent ones...... so... gooey.

    Fawk. Sorry to disappoint but theres no way of finishing before the deadline (2 hours). I tried for a 2 hour nap on my office floor last night (so as to not disturb my woman with an alarm at 4am) and woke up 5 hours later cozily in bed. Never rely on a sleep deprived mind to make wise production decisions. It is unwrapped but I have to make a good layout and lots-o baking n texturing left. Also I have to make the damn chinchilla ammo-- and I want to really enjoy that experience. I'm going to get it done well, instead of far too hastily. Look for it soon still, just not in < 2 hours. Also, this way I can do more "research" (play TF2 in frustration) and really nail the style down. I can't say I'm good enough to recreate TF2's style on my first shot, in 1 hour, when Valve artists spent months :\. Earlier start for me next time. Looking forward to seeing all the final entries and to the next comp! I do hope there are more minis like this to soothe the creative beast and work the skills until Unearthly Challenge 2008.
