Hey, just wondering what kind of specs all your machines are running on while you model, as my current PC isn't holding up to the strain of 3D. (It's getting a little legacy for my tastes)
Mine's a -(6 year old)
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
1 GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 440MX 64mb AGP8X
Windows XP Pro
and it's just clinging to dear life with the projects I'm working on.

"Geforce 4MX" is a lie invented by marketing people. Your card is really a Geforce2.
$30 will get you a DirectX 9 card. $20 will get you another gig of RAM. Then you'll be fine.
3ghz intel dual core, 4gb ram, nvidia 8800gts. It's not much compared to my quad core with 8gb ram at work though.. hehe I normally just play PC games at work

That RAM may not be the right flavor for your system, but the price is probably ball-park. At any rate, the video card is your system's real weakness. A $30 upgrade would buy you pixel shaders.
1.8 ghz dual core
3 gigs of ram
8800 gtx (768mem)
vista
my advice? the memory on here is fine, no probs, I've only had problems with HDD space (only running 320gb on here, runs out fast) and the graphics card was a great investment, seems to make it run nicer in some progs I need. CPU seems decent enough as well, though its probably bottlenecking my computer for things like games etc.
We live in days where lots of people have insane surplus of hardware capability, and unless you want to do Mental Ray rendering all day long, your system is fine. it's really mostly your graphics card that could be swapped out easily. even 1 GB RAM isn't that bad.
Though I guess most people will post some insane specs of work PCs or their high-end gaming systems... be warned hehe
it runs crysis comfortably on medium anything higher and its poo. It runs unreal engine 3 based games 40 frames or more on average at about 1024x768 with everything on almost full.
so yeah thats probably a bit like how your computer would run with an upgrade of graphics and ram, 8800GT wasnt cheap tho
I agree with every1 else, new cheap as chips memory and videocard and your off
Perhaps even look into getting a new fan for the p4, heard those buggers ARE LOUD!
2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800mhz

Partition 1: WinXP Pro 32bit SP2
Partition 2: Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1
External 1: Iomega 60GB HDD (for reference, textures, etc)
External 2: Western Digital Passport 120GB (for work stuff)
I built it +- 2yrs ago, and it originally had a GeForce 7950GX2 inside, which I upgraded last summer. Total price when I built it was around $2000. You could build it much cheaper now, though.
- 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor
- 2GB of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory
- 500GB Serial ATA 7200-rpm hard drive
- ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
Dual boot Leopard/XP, I'm sure Zbrush runs better at home than it does at work.I think I'll upgrade to 4GB RAM.
I can't decided on my laptop - a powerful macbook or an unpowerful EEE PC - 99% of time it'd just be used as a dumb terminal so I don't need a powerhouse. The EEE is less than half the price, so I could buy a pair of cowboy boots too.
Pentium 4 - 2.6 GHz
256 MB RAM
GeForce4 Ti 4200
I really need to upgrade
You really need RAM... a $25 investment there would greatly help your computer's performance.
768MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS 512MB (AGP)
Windows XP Home SP2
It can run UT3 and Crysis, but they don't look half as good as they do on the hardware they were intended for. For running Max and ZBrush, it does all right as long as I'm careful about not trying to have too many things visible at once. I'm strongly considering getting some more RAM very soon though.

rox, I've been doing some high poly stuff lately and it slows down a little bit but I've been told that's just mudbox
2.33 Core2Duo
2 GB RAM
ATI Radeon x1600
Dell Ultrasharp external monitor
Silo, Zbrush, Unreal Editor with no hitches.
Dual Xeon 5160 (3ghz)
4gb ram ECC
Quadro FX 3500
Vista Ultimate 64 bits
2.5ghz Core2 Duo
4GB RAM
Nvidia 9500M (supposedly it's roughly analogous to an 8600GT)
Vista Home Premium
LG 22" Wide external monitor
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 3800+ overclocked to 2.4ghz
4GM ram
8800 GTS
Windows XP 64bit
Dual 19" Acers
and my teeny tiny 4"/5" Intuos 3 from years ago.
So far so good. Recently got myself a 500g external to use for backup. GoodSync ftw.
the prices you listed for ram is probably what futureshop or bestbuy charges. And also you can get a geforce 7200 for less than $50 CDN

2 GB 667 Mhz RAM (dual channel)
nVidia GeForce Go 7700 512MB
Windows XP Professional
Core 2 Duo, 2.4ghz

Geforce 9800GTX 512mb (was running an 8600gt till recently)
XP Pro 32bit
Velocity Micro 21", 1680x1050
300gb WD internal HDD
500gb WD external backup HDD
Intuos3 4x5
Handles most everything with ease except crysis at highest settings and mudbox after 2mil polys or so. But that's just cause neither of them are that well optimized (hopeing mud2 handles alot more).
Laptop (C90S):
Core 2 Duo, 2.4ghz
3gb ddr2 667 ram
Geforce 8600GT 512mb
XP Pro 32bit
15" widescreen 1680x1050
250gb WD 5400rpm HDD
Runs most stuff well enough, but gets bogged down in games like UT3 where I have to turn the resolution down to either 800x600 or 1024x768 for smooth frame rates.

Everyone see Intel drop the price of their processors? Ill probably pick up a q6700 and an extra 4gb of memory soon.
Once you said this I figured "Ohh Skulltrail must've come out..." well, here's to outdated tech the month after I bought it :poly104:
Skulltrail = 2 processors on one motherboard...
Dual Core Processor
Nvidia 8800 GTS 320mb
2 GB RAM .
Still on the old XP Home Edition
...And one dying Samsung portable HDD.
athlon 64 venice 3200+ (2ghz)
2gb samsung ram(ddr1) (i got an update, 4gb kingston ram, but without antistatic hull, so i got out my car and the chassis shocked me and destroyed the ram)
geforce 6800gt
winxp32(i have to upgrade to 64bit, but i'm much too lazy)
IBM CRT 17" + Sony crt 19"
works fine for modeling, but rendering takes very long because of the 32bit
other bad thing about it is my 80gb hdd, much to small for graphics and musics editing...
AMD 3500+
4x512mb kingston hyper x ddr
geforce 6600gt with 256mb memory
It runs Crysis at minimum settings only, though it runs with playable fps. It runs F.E.A.R. with max settings at a relatively low resolution(800x600) nice. It can handle slightly less than 1 million visible poly's in modeling applications smoothly I think but I didn't really test this one.
AMD 3200+
2 go ddr
8800 gts (320 mb I think).
and a 7 years old NEC (c) CRT
But, actually, I'm just fine with it :]

19 inch lcd monitor, and 17 inch crt monitor
160 gb primary hd

Got three fans installed so its a bit noisy, but she runs beautifully. Crysis plays awesome, and Zbrush and Unreal Ed work pretty smoothly too
My current computer is a Dell, almost 7 years old now:
3.2ghz
1 gig ram
radeon x1550 256mb
windows xp
(single) 19" monitor
and a intuous 3 (small one)
as well as a 500gig external HD that failed on me once and scared the shit out of me (the drive tables got deleted somehow) but I was able to recover everything
3dfx voodoo.
Linux.
It's Cheapy's old system, he sold it to me when he got his rad new 200mhz.
It's a real powerhouse.
Intel Core 2 E8200 @ 2.66ghz
2 x 1GB G.Skill @1066mhz
Gigabyte P35 DSL3 1333 FSB
Earthwatts 80plus 500w psu
Rosewill Case
Vista x64
I divided up to 8 million polys in mudbox and the viewports/sculpting was still very smooth.
P4 2.66GHz
4GB of ram, although not all is recognized of course
Radeon X1650
80 Gig HD
500 Gig External HD
Windows XP Home
6x8 Intuos3 tablet
20" Dell monitor + 19" Samsung widescreen
I also use an aluminum imac for all my non-3d, internet and website stuff. Makes for a good photo ref monitor too when needed or playing music, movies/tv shows while I work.
...you must be shopping at radio shack..or futureshop... you can get a decent card for about 60 bucks...not a 8800 but something alot better than what what you have.
I usually go to canada computers, it's only in toronto tho.
ncix.com also has good prices, and they ship..(they lost my one and only shipment tho)
