thanks lemonhead I love your concepts its seems to me youve spent your time well even if you dont do 3D, not alot of people can concept like you do. I intend to be able to both concept well and do 3D really well, Im not there yet but I think I will get there .
Hey dude, that 3d Illusion thing is fantastic. I got it to work in a minute or two. How did you do that? As in where did you find the tutorial/explanation of how to make one of those things.

cheers saidin I just rendered from one camera angle and then rotated the camera around the target by a few degrees and rendered again then lined them up in photoshop like you see here. I didnt find any explanation for it online I just gave it a try and it worked for me.
3dcoat gotta remember its not polys so you keep it loose and dirty and it comes out pretty cool but if you try and refine it , it ends up like my bravestarr sculpt all smooth and conjoined
I started working on a mod team just for some fun. The mods called blackened http://www.blackenedgame.com/ . Heres some concepts and stuff Ive done for it so far. Just roughing out ideas still.
the ticket machine looks realy battered, but I guess they get to endure a whole lot of abuse
lol yeah its meant to be damaged but the art director on this mod wanted an even more damaged version! its meant to be in a city ravaged by alien creatures so yeah...
thanks pixel, I had to get rid of the big scratches in the end - wasnt quite the damage they were looking for but it was easy to change in 3dcoat
just a fun sketch, 1 or 2hrs or something. Also been doing alot of anatomy practise in pencil in my sketchbook - havent been bothered to scan or upload that stuff in a long time.
I want to learn about using maps that are not square eg here I wanted a map that was 2048x1024 but I didnt know how to get it to recognise only that area as the uv space?? any tips would be most appreciated
so heres my texture at 2048x2048(reduced to 512 for your viewing pleasure )
heres a pic of him in xnormal, no textures yet, I would also like to learn more about using alphas real time so I will make some hair to go on him later.
When I want to use rectangular maps I unwrap my UVs as if it was for a square texture until everything as the same aspect ratio, place them in a rectangular space 0-2 range horizontally, then select everything and resize to fit 0-1 UV range. Then at RTT time I specify rectangular formats.
Ok thanks so I take it Ive done the rest of it, just this last step Ive quoted that Im not sure how that works eg where can I spedify format in mamoset or in unreal engine 3?
It's when you create the texture that you have to set its size & aspect. It doesn't matter what aspect is used for softwares/engines like Unreal/Marmoset. As long as you keep it power of two numbers.
I'm not sure If you understand the meaning of my first post, if it is so I'm sorry not being able to express myself right

yeah I dont think I get what your saying. I found a setting in max's uv tools under "options"
that says "use custom bitmap size" so I changed the numbers there to 256 by 128 and that looks like it might have worked to get me the correct aspect ratio.
got some alpha hair in there, the normals dont quite match with the diffuse but I think its a really good start considering I havent really done this sort of thing before
I suppose I'm not so much referring to the girl - if you were, but even the enviornments. The rocks, the surrounding bushes, grass, etc. They all almost kinda "glow" together, preventing me from really seeing their solid individual shapes and characteristics. Did you smudge those, as well?
Something to try: Instead of the smudge tool, or a soft "glowy" type of brush for blending - try a sharper brush with really feathered edges perhaps with a bit of a noisy feel, set it's opacity to pressure and angle jitter to 100% for constant rotation. The feathered edges will result in some pretty easy blending, but instead of a smudged look, it will add a variety of texture with the strokes as you paint.

nice idea on the noisy soft brush, well to be honest the scene with the rocks was painted really rough and hard brushes and then smudged and then I realised it was way too soft and didnt show the shadows and highlights so I went back with a hard brush on top, guess you saw straight through to the base layer. That said it is just a speed paint and no where near as hard and rendered as it would be if I spent another 2 hours on it

Hi Ged, just looked through your sketchbook from start to end and I must say that you've improved so much over that time, nice work .... I really like the abstract sketch you did based on the terry pratchetts idea of the colour of magic, i think that painting style suits you, compared to your other stuff...plus your work rate is intense lol, keep it up mate

Thanks neoncypher Im flattered that anyone would be bothered to look through all of it haha. That colour of magic pic is a mix of 3d and painting, Im trying to improve my painting skills bit by bit. supposed to be working on a bus highpoly right now but Im feeling rather uninspired with it and I want to get on to textures.
trying my hand at the gameartisans challenge about 3 hrs in 3dcoat so far and just getting started, might try and find a way to get it across to zb for final details.

yeah my art teacher used to have a go at me in high school cause all I used to ever draw was robots haha been trying to diversify more since then.
Don't be afraid to be harder, sharper with your digital. The softer brushes give off more of a feeling of insecurity.
PRONOUNCE YOUR SCRIBBLING!
Not to offend by calling it "scribbilng", but you know what I mean. It seemed to flow.
Keep it up!
it actually was harder I just did a smooth pass with the smudge tool afterwards to blend the harsh strokes together I kinda liked it

On the speedpaints watch your edges, as they help the image to "read" better
Keep up the good work
