Try to not keep the same scale on your dirt details when you paint things in the background as you have in the foreground, you are hurting the depth of the images.
Nice bark though and the lightning is coming along.
lookin' good keen! I like the rendering on your camel toe beatle. and you're really getting good with those trees.
the rocks are looking good, I just wish it wasn't overcast so you would've had more interesting lighting. it looks flat overall. define the places of those faces more!
otherwise, good job man, I really enjoy seeing new stuff from you so often!
Rens - yeah I usually use a sharpen mask on my art after I finish to make it crisper. Unfortunately it did bad things to the edges, I'll make sure that doesn't happen next time.
Bounch - ha yeah, I was at the mercy of the photo ref! Which made it really tough to look 3dimensional.
Here's a building I was working on, got to do more buildings cause I had a hard time with this one:
man, you're really stepping up! I've had no time lately for some but it's very refreshing seeing you continue to pump stuff out. totally cool. traditional sketches are great as well.
I love the last vertical one and the purple one in the post before. very well recreated.
all your pieces stop at some point of detail, say at 50% or 75%,
but you can go further then that, add another layer of detail.
fill in those strokes and blocks with more and see how far you can go
it may not be your style and yes it will be time consuming,
but from what ive noticed, it really helps you understand the things you draw on another level
so for studie sake, its good to have tried it out
Vig, Ironhawk - Thanks guys! I'm glad you like it.
Rens - Thanks for your feedback, I've started another painting and I'll push it farther than my prevrious ones.
It's been a while since I posted, I don't have interenet at my apartment anymore so my posts will probably be weekly (when I'm mooching off my parent's internets).
Anyway I've been doing more sketching, got some more DVD's and been learning new things.
Edit: I realize that the top right guys face is kind of a mess and the top left guy's chin is too low. Anything else you guys see that needs improvement on these heads?
Just saw your sketchbook, Keen. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this. Your work is great. I'm just starting to brush up on my painting skills (haha get it?) and this has really inspired me. You've made a lot of progress since your first post, too. Keep up the amazing work!
Also, I'm checking out that page you linked, Ged. Very useful stuff, thanks much! Glad I saw that.
no problem uneditablepoly, wow keen such a lot of improvement since I last looked, love all these studys of environments, to add to what rens was saying about detail. Try making some custom photoshop brushes or just using a nice brush pack that has scratch rock looking brushes, spiky grass brushes, some leafy brushes etc etc and use those right at the end of the painting process to add some subtle but important detail. I can see youve used mostly the same one or two brushes to do most of these pieces(correct me if Im wrong) and I do that too but using nice shape brushes has sped up my detailing work alot. Anyway youve probably surpassed me in environment painting now, I hardly ever paint enviros.
Ged, great advice. thanks! I tried doing that on this latest one, but I need to practice it more. I think I need some new brushes too.
Here's a rough layout of one of the levels for the game, the little spec on the left is the size of the character (obviously it'll be zoomed in when actually played). I know I know it's not very finished, but I promise I will have a more finished piece once we figure out a level that works good for gameplay.
Oh and I'm officially aware I need to lay off the sharpen tool heh. Or at least not make it so obvious.
i feel that the sadfacemountain.. can use some more effects of some sort, darker sky, a bit more blur on the lightsources, really push the mood into it,
a bigger picture would be nice too!
great stuff all around though, really moving forward, do it! \o/
Rens - I agree, it does need more mood, I'll try to push my next piece in the right direction, and I'll try and make the picture bigger.
I'm working on a children's book with a friend of mine, not so good at making characters so I'd love to get some critiques. Hopefully the concept makes sense.
well, i dont know what i am supposed to see without a bit of story, so i guess it I sense something with a lighthouse or a family close to sea?
I really love it, nice colors, great faces to connect with.
For crits,
I dont know if you should to with 3 fingered people unless that is part of the story.
The placement of the feet can improve a bit, the man is standing pretty solid,
the woman could have the same placement, but has her legs are quite rotated and twisted,
the sleeves of the kids sweater give a nice mood of some sort, but i feel they can still improve somewhere to give it that little bit extra.
Besides that i was looking at the stlye, and lots of things came up but, i dont think you should clean it up too heavely, its nice to have a bit of roughness inthere,
Nice work, really like the scenery paintings. I can really see how your skills have developed from your earlier posts to your most recent. Could you let me know the name of the DVD you watched and where I can buy it please?

DeusExMatteo - The perspective brush is just a brush you can make in photoshop to save time making your perspective lines...Like THIS! http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/VeryKeen/perspective-example.jpg
Cubik - Agreed, I'll keep that in mind in the future, thanks!
Today I decided to doodle and managed to make this thing:
And more trees (of course )
Another photo study:
blur out the edges on the last one, they are really hard and makes it look weird.
keep up the pace

Did a fruit study today! Was a lot of fun, I did this one from a pictures, I'll have to do one from life soon. This one took about 1hr & 45min.
Here's some more:
next time maybe play around with some colored lighting on the apple?
Here's some more photo studies:

Great work and I can't wait to see what you come up with next!
(I need to remember to log off my brothers account before I post)
Did sketches today for a change, getting rusty, must do more sketches.

I've been slacking lately.....I gotta stop doing that.
I have found that architecture is a lot less forgiving then organic things. This one was pretty tough.
stop sucking... really.

your doing well man, keep going!
This is one of my favorites so far

That and I did some more perspective studies.
the tf2 turret perspective is trippin me out!
Here's some ideas for a game me and a couple of my friends want to do.

Alec3d, I think it took me roughly 3 1/2 hrs. I'm slow heh.
New one!

In the meantime, more photo speedpaints!
Jay, I've watched a lot of environment painting DVD's. Mainly the ones from this site: http://media.massiveblack.com/downloads.html
So the speed painting ones are a nice way to start.
Here's some more stuff, leaning on the cartoony side:
