Well... this has caused me a lot of grief over the past two weeks.
I thought my computer was good enough to handle Zbrush, but as some subtools got up to 2.5 million polies, it just pooped out on me. I had to upgrade my memory, and I bought a new graphics card as well, but I still need a new power supply to make the graphics card work! Arrrgh.
And like that wasn't enough, I also had to fight a nasty symmetry problem, and had crashes that made me lose my work.
Add to that my overall noob-ness to Zbrush, so yeah... I only really had time to do some rudimentary detail. I would have liked to take it a lot further, but this is going to have to do. So much stuff to do left! Oh noes!
I did actually do the feathers as well, but on a separate plane and only the unique ones.
I knew there was a reason I usually stick to Quake 3 specs.
The computer is basically a "default" Dell system that is 3 years old by now. The CPU is pretty decent, but the memory is pathetic. I upgraded it from 512 MB (!) to 1 GB. I couldn't use more because the motherboard is of an older and obscure type.
I didn't have a graphics card, only a graphics chip... which I discovered isn't even capable of rendering normals realtime! No wonder I had problems with any game newer than Quake 3.
Yes, you can all go ahead and laugh now. After the war I will save up for a monster computer... and do some low spec art in the mean time.

So how do you think you 're gonna do?
I'm actually in the same case concerning the normal maps , my computer is a mac mini.. the only tool I found working to create normal maps is Melody from Nvidia.. it "works" for me, I don't know for you.. but from what I heard it's far from the other method like xnormal ... hope this helps..
nice character btw .. not ultra detailed but I think it fits the style of your concept , good luck

Well... baking normals with 3dsmax does work, and rendering actually works too. I just can't have a viewport preview of it. I can also use CrazyBump, though I can only see the 2d preview. So it *should* work, if in a quirky way.
But if worst comes to worst, I'm steal... I mean, borrowing my boyfriend's computer.

lol...im sure renier will LOVE that! :P hehe. sculpt looks hot girl! and i absolutely love the scythe! its throwing the hot hot heat! you going to post some of the feathers you did?
Ah, a dell. Damn, that bites. Not much worse than a DELL if you ever want to upgrade... You should be able to build a decent system for around $400 - $600 if you use your existing screen, keyboard and whatever other components you can salvage from the dell. Just be sure you have a good power supply, motherboard and RAM. Thats the order of importance I place things when building a new system. You will be amazed at how much more you can do with a new PC

ok, good to hear that , I thought you couldn't work on your normal maps at all
good luck then
can't wait to see this textured!
Just quickly posting this here before bed. I rendered it at full self-illumination, because setting up a light scene sounds like too much thinking for my tired brain right now. :polytwitch:
I did not have time to rig. Boo. Still have to texture the pedestal tomorrow. I think I'll make it, lolz. *passes out*
Great work! I really like how the simple almost flat colors turned out, gives it quite an original look. The feathers and hair are especially cool, and the base is genius.
Congrats
I'm going on a holiday tomorrow, so I won't be able to check for contest updates until after I get back. Hopefully I can still see the Tuesday announcement though! I'll be still be in civilization at that point, but from Thursday on I'll be trekking through the Namibian desert for three weeks! :poly114b:
Your style is very distinctive its refreshing to see something different, its simple yet is not lacking in the things that make a great character model! Yet I do wish you could have given her some more life in her expression, but overall well done!

Hmmm, I hope my sis read that in time....Does anyone know if she submitted anything for the poster yet? I think it would be kind of difficult to do so from South Africa. Anyway, I already congratulated DP over e-mail for completing her contest entry in time. I think she did a very good job.

Glad to know at least some people liked it. :poly114b:
I just saw the list and that I didn't even make it into the top 50. I know I was a noob and all and that there were a lot of amazing entries... still, after having put in so much time next to my already full-time job, I can't say I'm not disappointed. :poly137:
I think the contest was a lot harder than any of the earlier Dominance Wars, because so many more forums joined this year's battle. So ofcourse it's a dissapointment, but I think you did a great job anyway. You'll only get better in the future and I wouldn't be surprised if there is another Dominance War next year.
I really like the beauty render of your model DP! I wish I could skin your model, but I'm to busy right now. I still like the design very much though. I think it needs a better texture to really make it pop.

great work!
and... you get the best-smilieusage-in-a-post-award
its coming along very nicely..
What specs is your PC? I have a fairly basic system with 2gb of RAM and a Geforce 8600gt and I can handle up to 9 milion polys before I crash.
