I'm in the market for a notebook I can take around and get some 3D modeling practice in. My first instinct was to find a gaming notebook to handle the graphical load. I was just wondering If anyone new any good deals or sites? I can go up to around $1000, I just want something reliable that can get the job done.
Or would you recommend I build my own? If so, what kind of specs should I shoot for?
Thank you for your time, I appreciate it to the fullest extent.

The first decent notebooks for 3d were about $3000. I'm not sure what they are now, but I'm guessing it's no where near the $1000 mark
Saving up a bit more cash and getting up to 2 grand and then you will have a solid notebook.
I'm working on an ACER Travelmate4400, and its pretty good. I don't do much highres sculpting, but for regular in game meshes and textures, and effects it works fine.
I'd say this looks like a good bet

1 gig ram, 120gig hd, core 2 duo, dedicated 256 mb VRAM on a geforce 8400M G
The ONLY thing I dont care for on my acer is that the graphics card is only shader model 2.0 capable. but I got a good deal on it and it wasn't an issue at the time when I got it. so
then again, if you just do modelling and not texturing, then maybe its not that worth it.
I ended up purchasing a Toshiba Tecra m7 Tablet PC 2 ghz Core 2 Duo , with 2 gig of Ram and a 256 Quadro vid card for 1700
Runs great and can play games too boot.
I love it, it was this or a Wacom Cintiq, I'd love to have gotten a Cintiq, but I wanted to mobility of the laptop too..
1.6 gig processor, 1g ram, 60g hd

I can afford any of those, basically I'm just modeling, texturing and 2d art in PS. Plus I'm pretty new to the 3D art world.
I like Vailias' find, but what will not having shader 2.0 prevent me from?
P.S. sorry for the late response I was at a wedding.
As always thank you for your time.
