Hey guys, can you list the 3d packages you know, and their default scene/object formats? Also, animation systems would be helpful. I don't know what they are for all the major packages, or if they all even operate on this principle.
For example, 3dsmax would be :
3dsmax
.max - scene
.3ds - objects
Animation systems:
Max Bones
CAT
Biped

XSI
.scn - scene, fx, pass info
.xsi - scene
.lws - Scene file
.lwo - Object file
I wish Max and Maya handled object loading in the same way as Lightwave, it's nice to open lots of objects at once and all have them retain their original file structure, you can swap between objects without having to close one and load another.
.scn - Scene File - scene
.xsi - DotXSI format - geometry, local animation, texture
.emdl - External Model File - saves selected Scene info externally for reference...geometry, rigs, lights, etc.

.sia - scene
.sib - scene
.obj .3ds - objects
Not sure what the difference is between SIA and SIB, might be ascii and binary, or it might just be the difference between the beta format and the actual final scene format.
.blend - scene file
Zbrush
.ztl - tool (model)
.zbr - document
.zli - light(s)
.zmt - material
