In that first picture, the city looks like something that would come out of a trash compactor in a scrap yard... you know, like when they crush old cars into little cubes.
It looks amazing, i was five years too late to see it sadly. I
went there in 98 rite before the change over. Everyone there thought that the change over was going to suck. Insted its made the city better in many ways and china as a whole better too.
Incredible photos there, and some really interesting backstory to go with them, cheers.
What I thought were even cooler were the photos of Gunkanjima (officially known as Hashima Island). Apparently the island is currently off limits, but people are trying to get it reopened to visitors this year. If it's been reopened when I visit Japan at the end of the year, I'm so spending a day there. I mean hell, it still holds the record for highest population density EVER recorded, aparently, and it's been abandoned for over 30 years. Craziness.
there have been games that take place in the walled city. One which heavily referenced it as of late was Bujingai for Playstation 2. It featured a main character modeled off of the performer Gackt and revolved around black magic and a hell on earth scenario. Was a great game that was highly overlooked and featured some pretty awesome combat and interesting visuals. I also believe that Rise of the Triad took place there as well in parts.
Check out the book 'City Of Darkness' for some amazing pictures and stories. We have it lying around the office. Although it's a misconception that the city was completely lawless and untaxed or governed.

... hilarious.
Thanks for the literary find, Daz. Ordered.
The city reminds me a lot of Shenmue for the xbox.
