yeah tyler i am using fbx cause that seems the easiest way. i am doing it piece by piece and reassembling everything. Problem is i was having to rebuild my shaders and re do my lights. Not really a problem cause i have max 8 and 9 open at the same time to see where i have to put things just a little annoying.
Don't forget you can save your materials and shaders, hopefully max8 will be able to open them. That might save you some time from having to rebuild them?
Ok so this is how I ended up doing it. FBX wasn't working and just kept crashing so I went with OBJ and exported as tris since when i did it as quads my uvs got jacked up. Made sure that I exported the material library and opened up the objs in max 8. Imported the material library. Redid my lighting and I was done.
Worked pretty good and I didn't run into too many issues besides having to redo the lighting.
Well, it might just die in the latest version of Max. It basically converts the scene into a Maxscript file, but I don't think the tool has been updated in awhile, so the maxscript might be incompatible. Worth a try though.
