mhm this looks realy close to what square has been showing off in their tech demo. maby they used whatever middleware was demonstrated at sigggraph.

Wait, hang on. Why was there a shot of the debris re-entering the atmosphere? Sure the explosion would bleed off some speed of any object facing prograde to it. But wouldn't normally be enough to de-orbit.
Because of Kerbal Space Program I can never watch spcae movies without fealing slightly disapointed anymore.
Why does the water look like quicksilver? Is it just about taking the picture at the right moment, so it doesn't look like smooth water?
If by 'right moment' you mean 'at sunrise/sunset when the sun is low so you get a strong reflection' then yes. But what's also very important is a very high shutter speed you have a short exposure, and thus very little motion blur.
