I fucking hate things like that Everything is a remix... some of the things will be a homage no doubt, but some of those comparisons are stretching it a bit. I realise what the intention is but fuck, things are often more than the sum of their parts
Such an awesome ad, tho it leaves me wondering why they made Kratos both CG and not say anything, when they could have easily gotten the voice actor and used a buff actor to play the part!

I think it's a very cool thing. They've actually used a model that looks exactly like him instead of using some buff dude who only has a remote likeness. It's the future!
As for the Matrix video I don't think they're trying to show that they've ripped something off. They're merely showing where it all comes from originally, the inspiration etc. I could be wrong though..

Seriously, a LOT of those examples were really thin. You mean more than one movie had high action shoot outs? NO WAY!! And the stances for one type of kung fu are similar? Get out of here!!
Some were obviously homages, and that's awesome. It's cool that people saw that and recognized it. But way too much was being read into a lot of that stuff.
Also, yes, everyone should watch Dark City. Amazing movie, with incredible atmosphere.
Phatty, i realise whats being said but that outlook bothers me, its also a youtube video made to be easy to understand, i cant ask him questions or go further indepth about the concepts so ive no interest in videos like that.
Just to isolate something in particular though, theres a scene in the 2nd part where he shows Luke returning to burned home... Now, inspiration or not if i was to ask some questions about - what you want to portray / mood / his reaction, how many possible outcomes are there from these? There will be times when people come to a similar conclusion because its a good way of tackling the problem.
My point is, that regardless of inspiration there will be a common set of solutions for convenience/reaching a wider audience and all that shit, so to chalk it all up to "inspiration" and remixing kinda pisses me off.
You should read things like Will Eisners book on graphic storytelling or the books by Scott McCloud, theyre not directly related but its just their way of conveying story and doing it well... things like that can end up being universal.

Yeah I agree that there is a certain point where commonality between two pieces doesn't nescesarly mean that they are remixed. Like you said the best method to convey a story device is usually the method everyone uses.
That matrix video also reads into the correlation a little more than it should.
If you watch the 3rd video though I think he does a pretty good job relating the idea that the creative process originates through replication of proven forms and their improvement. Remixing or the creation of derivative work doesn't have to be cast in a bad light if the end product is a significant improvement and creative entity of its own.
True, it isn't always a bad thing at all, and derivative/polishing ideas is a great way to work, perhaps we cant create something truelly "unique" but w/e its a subject that goes on and on with semantics and allsorts of stuff
Hell, im enjoying Darksiders a lot, even though there are things about its design i question or find a bit funky i still find myself having loads of fucking fun.
It's a bit of a shame that they didn't give out custom swords though. You'd think after 5 years they'd at least have earned them enough money to afford it!
