Just wanted to post the progress on the beast's head, still have a few more things to do to it, but hopefully you guys can see the direction. Comments and crits are appreciated. And when I get a chance Jonny, I will post the wires on the skull.
Wanted to show some more progress, this is the spine that will be used for the detached head and beast, and just threw the skull on to show what it might look like together. Thanks guys for all the comments, and I will be playing with the jaw on the beast when I add his jaw blade and such. Hope you guys like it, and any further crits always help.
Hey all, just wanted to post some of what I worked on today. Still have alot of work to do on the body, but got some of the areas fleshed out, though I still have to smooth out some of the muscles, as they are kinda harsh. Hope you guys like it, and keep tossing me those crits, as they are really helpfull.
serious goodness in here spark, one thing that bothered me earlier which I dont think I mentioned yet was the length of the legs. In the base mesh he felt quite squat because his thighs were too short. I'd play with the length and maybe adjust the pose accordingly but I think it would help sell this guy more.
Now, I know that you are taking this whole week off from work to give this guy some attention...so what gives:)
Are we gonna see an update on this big guy or what? I expect that the next post is going to be fully textured, lit, and rendered:)

My only suggestions are on the hands. They are probably on your list of refinement, but I would add some variation to the length of the center and forefinger, just to break it up. Maybe add some length to the nails, etc.

Ok, after a long week of working on this (along with a corrupted file and losing some work!) I am ready to start posting some hi rez shots if I can get a computer to handle it. This is just the robot head for the ship, the ship, and all the other parts of Torn are coming tommorrow. Hope you guys like it, and thanks for all the crits and comments guys.
Well, after a few crashes and not being able to do the render I wanted. Here is a basic render from max (light tracer kept dying on me) I have a few parts left on the character, and tonight I will finish his weapon. I plan on playing with the body of torn a bit, as some of the proportions are off, but due to time I will have to forgive it on the high poly. Thanks for looking guys, and polycount for the win!

Oh yeah and a grey material (maybe with a bit of spec?) would be nicer, you don't even have to waste precious modelling time waiting for the GI
I was having the same problem rendering my guy, so i started using Metal Ray's new daylight (mrSun, mrSky). It seemed to use less memory and i thought it looked pretty good. Have you given that a try yet?

I'd definately scale Torn's forearms down a notch and make him give the dwarves legs back.
Maybe make the Skulls bigger. I wonder how you gonna make these hair in low poly?
