I really liked it how it was.. probably that mixed with some of those tubes passing in and out of his really cut up skin covered with dried blood. In mudbox I'll make the chest look alot flabbier. Double..maybe even triple ripple boobs. As for the legs and the feet.. I you'll like what I have in mind.. next update though. Im not totally sure about the hole.. sometimes I like it sometimes I dont ...thanks.
My favorite Mongo concept so far is the one where he is wearing Mr. Kite's General's skin. It would be the ultimate burn to CGchat to go with that concept and enter it in as your final. [insert evil cackle here]
you should make a reason why his face is strecthed back like that. Maybe have hooks dug into his face pulling his skin back. like a dog hooked to a leash.
I would agree with bodanski. I also think the grouping of the wires should be redesigned. Maybe have a thick cluster of them coming out from someplace. The general concept is very strong though. I'd picture him as being incredibly huge. Might get stepped on.
You should consider what are the tubes for and then you can make them on specific positions and they wouldnt look that random. If they should be some kind of veins you should make them longer and let them also show under the skin.
I love the idea that something is coming out of his belly!
Bodanski - I really like the hooks going through his cheeks. They would probably need to be refined a bit to fit the concept but.. hrm im definately going to think about how I could incorporate something like that in the design.
Update. Bah just noticed a bunch of things i forgot to add but heres an update all the same. Reworked the tubes for ya. Oh and imagine a glass fish bowl holding the brain.
i love it so far! i just don't know if i like the brain. kinda cliche. maybe go for some kind of orb inside that harnesses cuhrazzzy powa. like (geek time) materia or something. or even coolor, a fragment of the polycount homeworld. or a whole galaxy(MIB). just something nutty.
no way. brains in liquid screams sci-fi. must keep.
i'm not much of a fan of the tubes surfacing every now and again like the lochness monster, but having some sort of brain in there ties them in a bit better. perhaps have some of the tubes feeding into it.
Right now he's looking like the love-child of an Abomination and a Shambler, which is cool indeed. The mouth is great, it reminds me of one of the Cenobites from Hellraiser, particularly Chatterer.
Slum - Damn the chatterer looks awsome. He does look alot like my character. I might need to steal those hooks pulling back his mouth.
Playing around with the wire layout still and I added a goldfish (not really sure about him yet). I also made a..case fan.. for him but I couldnt find a place on him that it would fit. Im going to go over everything again.. just saw mop and tully's entry.. geez.
it's lookin good man. The brain concerns me. The brain itself is not connected to anything. It's just floating there. Is the brain just an ornament? I think that if you wanted it to seem that the brain is actually his brain or something, then you should do something that makes the brain connect to his body or even the tubes you have there.
-Askhat- Yeah he has a jaw but its covered in fat. Think of it like hes wearing a executioner's coif.
-Dread- The way I was thinking about it was that the green liquid going through those tubes and filling the fish tank is conductive of what ever electrical brain waves he may have, if any.
Hehe, I like this one, pretty cool idea and nice character to it so far
One thing I notice, is that while you have a lot of large forms in your sculpt of the big guy, you seem to have gone in for the fine detail (those cracks and tears) before you've got any mid-level detail in... the sort of pulling muscle tissue and suchlike, more folds of fat etc.
Overall the surface shape is still quite basic, and I think you could get a lot more interest in there if you just dropped down a couple of sub-d levels and really pull the forms out...
Hehe funny that you say that. I was talking to poop on aim no more than 20 minutes ago and he told me the same thing. So I'll get to work on that and have an update for you guys probably tomorrow.
[Edit] Just did some tests. Is there anyway to do this without damaging the smaller details (cracls etc.) when I tried everything became faded. I'd pretty much have to start over on all the detailing at that point.
I personally think he would look a lot better if you chose a more realistic color scheme. Take a look at some of the mutants in games like Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 and try to draw inspiration from them. It's clear that you're going for a more stylized, slightly dark humor, but a "happy medium" of realistic, but stylized artwork would look best in my opinion.
Keep it up. I've been watching him since the day you started the thread, and I'm looking forward to seeing more.
aesir- Yeh I am liking the first one best right now too.. I'll keep playing with it though. Im off on spring vacation so I have lots of time to finish this up.
jgarland- Dude all my colors so far have been taken from references earlier in this thread. Ive tried a few color schemes with more of a living skin look but.. I dunno.. Intially I'd like to go for a more realistic dead skin look but in the end its what ever looks best on the model.
very nice colors on the first one, maybe push the gradient a little more? It could give it a nice stylized look maybe even mess around with some custom shader junk? anyways looks nice
yeah the first is better. I love the wrinkles in his skin, they look great! i think the green stuff is a bit too bright though, experiment with that color and the details on the red bits.
keep it up!
Hey Matt, this is looking awesome, I definetely like the first one also, as the skin feels dead, like he has been wearing it awhile. Love the color tones on this guy, and can't wait to see the final.
Hey guys. Im kind of bummed out that they pushed back the contest deadline... and also a bit surprised that Fred has not posted it on the main page, but anyways. I started work on the base and the pose.. I am really liking where the base is headed. I dont really like the pose right now. And I dont know much about lighting/rendering so this will definately be a learning experience.
Crits/Ideas please
Theres no lighting in the scene just the emissive maps right now.
Looking pretty cool, I would do something about the teeth tho, they look out of place being so bright. Have a look at some pics of elephant teeth and other large herbivore teeth to get an idea about how to color them and muck them up a bit. Something around the eyes also seems lacking, maybe add some creases and wrinkles to make them fit better, agian an elephant eye may be a good reff.

[edit] ignore how sloppy the wires look [/edit]
[Edit] Also should I bother modelling the texture of his skin?
nice work

Topogun is crazy btw. Everyone should definately check that out.
[Edit] Just a test. I know the stomach's messed up and its all smudgy but I'll fix that in the final.

[Edit] Bit o Progress
[EDIT] GD I just re-read the brief.. my texture sheet is half of what it could be. eh..1024x1024. Oh well.
keep it up!
are you still working on spec map? I'd make all those red bits gooey and shiny
Theres no spec map on that last one, just emmissive/diffuse.
Started working on the spec on this one and pretty much finished up the diffuse. Im not really set on either just yet.
Mongo brushed his teeth for this render
