i recently heard about this, i guess you cna use it to view normal mapping as you work in the viewport, and for me this would be quite nice. however i can't seem to get it working, what are the steps i must go through for this to work? i am using 3ds max 7 and am doing the following steps, of which i am sure i am missing some important ones:
1.)make sure viewport is using directx 9 driver. checked in driver configuration for anything involving dx9 materials... saw nothing.
2.)recreated a materal i had in a scene using directx 9 shader type. applied to mesh.
now while this renders fine it does not show up in the viewport... not even the diffuse does. what am i missing?

Did you check the box saying "DX Display of material" in the Material Editor (it's under the Viewport Manager rollout, I think) ... then the "show map in viewport" icon should turn pink & white, click that and your material should show in the viewport.
Or just look in the Max help on it, you know...
