generic grid/cluster software?

a while ago i built myself a cluster computing system just to have some fun, however once i got it all together i was only able to play around with the sample apps... like calculating pi. this was becuase in order for the software to work your app had to be programed to use their .dll which did the distribution. since then i have disassembled it and gave some of the pc's to family members who needed an upgrade and turned one into a movie/theater pc.
i still have some of the pc's left and am wondering if there is any type of generic cluster software i can use that would allow me to run multithreaded apps not specifically designed for the software?
p.s. i'm on windows.
