hi
does anyone know of a free or cheap program like zbrush thats gonna work with max 6?
I want to try out this normal-map modeling lark, and will get silo2 when it's out, but want something free to cheap in the meantime to sharpen my tools so to speak.
I did try z-brush once but it's arse-about-tit way of doing things kinda turned me off.

Or I beleive there is a test build of Blender with displacement painting.
$109 buy now, $169 (?) after release.
And i was pleasantly surprised to see them actually use the proper ratio from dollar to euro, instead of a 1:1, as i was expecting. yayhooray!

I'm still in the spaz lumpy box sculpting stages with it, but in my limited use it's been really straight forward to use and very customisable. It's not as good for really superficial details like pores and wrinkles but fine for most stuff you'd want to bake out to normal maps.
Both final versions will be released at the same time though, so no worries about that. Some people have said the next beta will be crossplatform, but wether that was blatant speculation of inside knowledge remains to be seen.
