Been working on this for a while, would have been nice to get it done for the competition, but better late than never, hehe. I loved Candyland as a kid, and Mr Mint was always my favorate. Here is my concept sketch. I wanted to go for a mint inspired emo messenger guy.
I'm pretty much done modeling and UVing, I'll start texturing this week. I'm thinking of adding a button or two to his outfit, but when I'm positive it's done I'll upload an SDK before I start on the texture. Currently 3373 tris, and he's UV mapped onto a 512 (clothes) , a 256x512 (head/hair) and a 256 (messenger bag)

crotch seems a little wide/flat
lookin sharp tho
what's the color scheme gonna be?
Are you gonna candy cane him up?
I think this looks great so far, the only thing that struck me as odd was the crotch and the shoulders.
great job :] as usual
Cool dude, but I agree about the crotch area (easy fix).
Are you gonna candy cane him up?

errr....Freud? haha!
Nice man. Very clean low poly as usual, maybe just a few tweaks as the peeps mentioned.
Is it just me or is there somewhat of a resemblence going on there?
I was hoping your model would have some style, but it's emo...haha.
Keep it up, friend!
HAR HAR
Psh, preps wear more pink than that!
this one is really coming together, are you going to alpha the zipper or is it already modelled as seperate polys?
I'm liking how it's turning out so far.
Nice texturing!

jean texture looks nice but I think the wale is a little too visible from this distance. higher-frequency might help, or just go for noise instead of actual lines.
Other than that, I think it looks great.
Probably could benifit from a little fraying though, as the other said.
What happened with the SDK?

HAHA, jk Ben. I really like it. I agree with the fraying comments.

I really like the silhouette and shoes, but the shading seems a trifle inconsistent to me. Especially the back of the knees seems overly flat to me, as if they were folds that someone pressed up flat against a scanner or something, d'you know what i mean?
I do really love the front of the knees, though.
Also the dark blue lines near the bottom strike me as being a bit odd, maybe just because they're so saturated (while i wouldn't suggest using pure black on them, maybe a complimentary colour could work?)
Thirdly, the slanted texture on the jeans (rrright? jeans?) makes it seem err, un-jeans-like?
Great work on it so far though, now if you just tweak it a bit you'll get my official stamp of approval and i'll love you again.
*ZIING!
I'm not so sure about the style of painting on the textures. The way the folds are painted specifically. The dark dark creases plus what looks like specular highlights really throws me off. And the back of his jeans behind his knees is offly folded/bunched up.
Just a general comment on the Mr. Mint character itself: I don't know much about Candyland, but I'm curious if your take on the character is of the same age from the original. He looks young, mid to late teens, but his name is MR. Mint. When I first saw this thread's title I thought it was going to be an older gentlement from Gumdrop Lolli-land - not an 18 year old with a freshness fetish. Probably not an issue, just something thats hitting me the wrong way.
Also, those jeans would have to be spanking new to hang that low on the heel and still be perfect. He just starting his job?
The satchel kicks all kinds of ass, and I wish I had one IN REAL LIFES.
Nice amounts of fancy all over it, though. I dig.
[you can tell I've been hanging around with Travis too long...]
Some things that I'd look to improve are shown in this quick paintover!
- More geometric cloth folds. Currently your cloth is folding very organically in smooth round shapes which looks odd. Denim in particular tends to have sharper edges to the folds, and no areas really get that far into shadow, especially as you have them around the ankles and back of the knee.
- More colour range. The cloth is looking really monochromatic at the moment. Some more colour variation in the shadows and highlights would really help to sell the materials. Also I noticed that the highlights on the jeans are getting too saturated, as a result they don't look as much like denim as they could.
- Since the guy's already about 3000 polys, I don't think it'd hurt to cut in an extra 12 or so triangles around the base of the jeans to accentuate the folds going on there. It kinda looks weird to have harshly shaded deep folds, but perfectly flat geometry, when it's not too difficult to add that cheaply.
- The shape of the knees in the jeans looks a bit off, they're presented as big blocks of highlight, which makes it look a bit like he has huge metal kneepads under his trousers.
- Look at the paintover!
- I didn't add a penis!
Shaping up really nicely though, it's also inspiring me to try something with a similar poly/texture budget. Keep it up!
p.s. I hate you Sam, please die, kthnx.

Also, having the main bag colour as beige isn't working very well IMHO, it's blending in with the shirt too much, Tully suggested making the whole thing red, and I think that's a great idea - it'd match nicely with his little overshirt and contrast better with the shirt and jeans. I just feel it's a tad busy right now.
Keep it up
