yes i used to say i had a rediculously fast metabolism and used to eat shit and still have six pack and whatever, but about 2 years ago, iwas working hard labour, so i was doing exercise, but eating loads, and i satarted to put weight on for fisrt time, ive put on about 2 stone since then (11-13) and i finally think ive got it under control. but as you get older you need less calories and as a perpetual pig it was hard to stop eating mamoth meals.

im not on atkins or any diet, but ive tried to change my lifestyle so i dont eat as much carbs, notably not eating sandwhiches for lunch, and only having small portions of potatoes (or whatever) in relation to proteins and salad/vegs.

of and no kebabs when drunk, i have falafel instead(real good persian falafel takeout near my house), which has the added bonus not feeling like ive eaten a brick the next day

atkins diet seems like the quick fix diet to me. You shed pounds quickly, but it doesn't really change your lifestyle and eating right.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Low-carb eating works as a lifestyle. I eat maybe 50-60g of carbs on a day I'm not lifting weights, and while that's not Atkins induction restricted, it's still maybe 20% of what most people consume.

    [ QUOTE ]
    stop eating food after 9pm

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is not a real issue! I'm gonna have to find some links.

I plucked those from Google in about five minutes. If I had gone to an actual bodybuilding site, I could get zillions of references. Keeping your body's energy intake as steady as possible is critical to successful body composition change. If you're pairing your diet changes with an effort to actually gain muscle mass, I'd go so far as to say it's *critical* to eat before bed - the hardcore actually wake up in the middle of the night to eat an extra meal. Seriously! Read about Ryan Reynolds' training for Blade 3 or Hillary Swank for Million Dollar Baby; both of them needed to add muscle *and* improve definition (lose fat). If eating late at night caused fat gain, why did they do it? The results speak for themselves, as Reynolds looked particularly buff as Hannibal King.

Good job steady, and all well and good for now, but imho you're sending out a questionable message that you can retain a good shape and eat crap like that every day for any period of time because you have a 'ridiculous metabolism'.

It is not just your ridiculous metabolism allowing you to get away with that. My guess is you are significantly under 25. Maintain that diet for long, and there is no way you'll be able to maintain your weight. Once you get into your late twenties, or even earlier, you will pile it on. Lord knows what you're doing to your arteries.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This was true for me. As I was a fit 6'2, 205 until I hit about 27, then my weight started creeping up. I topped out at about 235, but have started working out more seriously, and am back down to about 220.

The odd thing is that even though I'm doing less weight lifting and more cardio than when I was younger, I'm actually far stronger than I was. I'm not sure whether this is just due to my body filling out more, or if I've just started training smarter.

Damn Ryno I'm in the same boat and I'm 22, I blame being engaged and severely twisting my ankle while jogging down a crappy Seattle sidewalk (come live in Seattle, even our sidewalks have pot holes!).

I'm about 220 right now, I've only gained about 15 pounds, but fat just looks bad on me, so I'm working out which thus far has only made me gain weight, so I cut out the smoothies I've been making all the time to cut down on juice and sugar. Now I'm also sapping the water cooler at work like mad, along with 2-4 cups of green tea a day, I feel much less bloated after meals.

thats not entirely true about Atkins being a quick fix..
Sure, if you go back to the same habbits from before, its only temporary.. but you could easily switch from Atkins, To a calorie restrictive diet, or increase your exercise load and keep the weight off. It is true, that Atkins no longer works AFTER you stop doing it.. duh..

But yeah, Atkins is a lifestyle, people tend to stay on it for their entire life. on later stages of atkins tho, you can eat up to 150 net carbs a day, depending on your personal metabolism, I try to keep it under 20 on most days, up to 30, if I am feeling like it. I have never really moved past induction yet.

your metabolism is always working, more frequent meals, with smaller portions is better for fat burning, of course portion size is mostly irrelevant with Atkins, of course with Atkins, lower calorie intake does equal MORE weight loss, but you will lose weight regardless of your intake as long as your carbs are in line but it depends on your personal metabolism

I'm 6'4", and 195 lbs. And that's been the same for the past 5 years. In fact, I'd like to add some pounds. Doesn't seem possible.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You can have some of mine. 6'4" 215. Tryin to cut back how much I eat lately, particularily difficult with the QA job cause we don't do jack all freakin day. Definitely nowhere near as active as I used to be not more than a few years ago. Doesn't help that my weekends are just as busy as my weekdays, I really enjoy going out mountain biking / kayaking / hiking... nice to be actually doing something while exercising. Hopefully for the time being cutting back on how much I eat will help out some.

    I can't do atkins. Ever smile.gif
I'm doing southbeach right now, along with bowflex strength training, and swimming. I've shed 14lbs since the 22nd, dropping from 275 down to 261. The first 2 weeks of SouthBeach are hard, since it's all protein with no sugar or carbs. Lots of lettuce, mushrooms and meat, basically. I start phase 2 this Monday, which means I can have whole wheat bread, pasta, potatos and fruit again. laugh.gif
