I played this game at E3... and was really disappointed that there was no double jump. Though, I've been told that it's now some kind of power-up. But still, no double jumping off the bat is kind of a let down.

Seriously. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

By that standard... Nintendo should have stopped YEARS ago.
[and I apologize for bringing that gripe of mine into this thread]

What I meant was don't rehash something old with 3D graphics when it already works fine in 2D. If you are going to do something in 3D make sure that there is some advantage to it being 3D.

How do you know if it's a straight out rehash though? Kinda hard to judge that from a preview.
It's not against the 'rules' to have a followup title with a very consistent look with its previous titles.

From looking at the movies and screenshots it does look like a bit of a rehashing to me with some flashy new effects and monsters. Not that that's a bad thing but does it really need to be 3D? I think the overall visual style suffers because of this. Some guys like the 3D look. I don't.
If the game is fresh and creative and uses 3D in some innovative way then I will eat my words.
Perhaps they made it easier? The first screen shows that the armor can take four more hits, was it really possible to get that much armor in the original?
I want this game, and hope they toned the difficulty down a bit. I used to play the SNES version like crazy, beating it plenty of times back then, but now that I'm an old, slow adult I like my easy settings.

Back then, such graphics were all sweet:
