mmmm think you could be right there spacey, seeing it on crap laptop ATM and it looks really wahed out, think its the screen but it could still do with a touch darker
yo shep, you use textporter ? i would recomend it to uvw layout. the rifle could use a lightsource, so far it is a bit confusing like light coming from the back and bouncing in weird ways, i did a shitty dodge n burn paintover hope you dont mind
ive used texporter befor but i like my tech, of using good old uvw-unwrapper for mechanical shit anyway, faces and such get some unfold3d treatment.
i didnt think the lighting was confused, ill take another look at it if thats what your thinking. i was using a strong point of light from the top, and a small point from below, to get that metailc swhine (one light source just doesnt do it for metal) are you talking about horzontally?
from the paint over i cant really tell apart from the main barrel

Right now the way you've shaded the wood makes it look translucent. As if it were painted vinyl of some sort. try keeping the wood a constant tone other than the highlights and shadows. A broad lightening like you currently have, is what is making it look off.
havent had time to redo the stock of the rifle,but will do, but in the meantime ive been making this, its the fighter plane gun, that can also be used by a character

keep the small highlights and ditch the "general lighting"
