what do you guys use to track your expenses, like purchases, gas, money you have remaining. I use excel, but im trying to find a good program to do the same thing.
I use my online banking to keep track of all purchases, try to stick to money I DO have as much as possible, rather than credit cards. It's convenient to use a debit card in order to see all purchases and expenses right as you make them.
Most online bank accounts have a little expenses tracking tool built in which can be really handy. My Wells Fargo does at least.
danr: I'd definitely recommend you change your ways. Identity theft can be quite prolific. Also, I used to be like you until I moved to America. One thing that's really bizarre here is that you can end up 'signing up' for a monthly payment for something without what I would consider to be true consent. I got burnt. I once had something mumbled to me about a free magazine at Bestbuy after buying something. I guess I must have said yes and the next thing I know I had a paying subscription to a magazine. It was completely insane and money was coming out of my account every momth. It took me quite some effort to get unsubscribed, and I never got the money back. It's happened to me twice. Another time I found 20 bucks a month coming out of my account going I have absolutely no clue where. So I just called Wells Fargo and told them to cancel it. Completely immoral and frighteningly common.

I have an expenses tracker on my phone, I use that
I keep my credit stuff paid off in case I lose my job (or decide Ive had enough) and do most of my purchasing in cash whenever possible. Im not comfortable spending more than I have on hand anyway.
my fiance does the paperwork, but since i'll be moving to NJ in a few weeks, i'll aggresively keep tabs on everything because its so expensive in NJ for housing.
