Anyone know how, I have a browser similar to acdsee for .vtf files but for the life of me I can't find out where the textures are stored? From what I've been reading about the game the textures seem to be packed into the .bsp some how, any help?
VFT files are the actual texture data. It's valve's proprietary format for texture data. If you have the HL2 SDK there is a utility called vtf2tga.exe that will convert a VTF to a normal targa file. Then to make a VTF use the vtex.exe utility.
Yes I know what a .vtf is, the question was where they were stored so I could extract them. After some more searching I have finally found the path, if anyone else is wondering the textures are stored here.
c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\source materials.gcf\hl2\materials
You MO FO, I figured out where the textures were stored and I've seen them all! 2048x2048 pants on lost coast fisherman and occlusion baked into the boat's colour maps.

another helpful tool is the Photoshop plugin to open and save source vtf texture files.
