Geez, big night for HL2 mods. Episode 2 of Minerva drops, now this! Empires is a very polished looking mod for HL2 that has one player playing a traditional RTS style game, building buildings and vehicles and the like, with all the other players on the team acting as the ground troops. Load up Steam and you should get a News popup link to watch the trailer, if you're so inclined.

server's getting hammered right now, so if you can't get through, here are the mirrors that it lists:

415 megabytes, so i won't be able to play it for a wee bit, but I figured some people might like to know about this. BF2 is a game I really enjoy, and while this game has the commander pulling even more duties than in that game, I still think it has a lot of potential. Actually playing the game will tell, hopefully
edit update: enough servers are around now to have a relatively un-lagged experience, but you'll still want to stick to the low player count servers, probably ~16 or less.

There's a lot of bugs at the moment which is to be expected, first release and all. Vehicles lag like hell, the insides of buildings disappear on low detail, etc. It also has a painfully bad framerate on high detail, but medium seems alright if you turn off some of the bells & whistles.
Overall it's a great start, though. And lots of good servers have been put up now.
with the turret and wall building it even reminds me of Tribes as well

oooh! Downloading!
Will this mod ever have bots?
EDIT: Man, Steam is already taking hours just to update itself, didn't even start patching the games yet. And why aren't the scrollbars working at all?
Now it's telling me it'll take 2 hours to start the game. What's there to update about Empires? It's not in the Steam listings so what updates is it installing? Meanwhile the bandwidth monitor says it's using ~10kB/s average. I knew Steam was retarded but it wasn't this bad last time I used it.
