who cares if they are sensitive, asshole or neutral pipes.... they look good, its sci-fi art, its meant to look good at the cost of real world hold backs sometimes

Do you really want sensitive cables that exposed on a machine that's going to see heavy combat?
[/ QUOTE ]
Could be a medium-light unit that sacrifices some armour for speed/agility. Or the unit might work as a team where it works to flank a few large enemies and since a group of them cannot be targeted at the same time the total cost effectiveness to produce a unit is worth it because the damage it can do is far greater in this senareo and more of them could be produced with money saved (a bit like a 'strength in numbers' 'cannon fodder' unit). Mabye the unit has a combat style taylored to be able to minimise damage to it's weak points. etc..
I'm surprised my comment sparked so many responses.
JKMakowka: Yes I supposed energy shields could easily allow for a lack of hard armor protection.
Arshlevon: Also a possibility, though usually when you go for flexibility in a substance you loose durability. Unless Chico responds differently I'm going to assume a bullet could pierce one of those cables.
Rorshach: I respect your opinion, admittedly sci-fantasy produces very beautiful designs, but Chico himself said he doesn't place his mechanical bits just for looks, he does it for functionality. The placement of his cables seems to be in contrast to that design intention.
Vanilla: A very good point. If this mech had short range jump capabilities it could easily maneuver itself around the battlefield. A thing to keep in mind though is that this is being developed for the Dominance War, at least that's what Chico said at the beginning (as a companion piece to someone else's model if I recall correctly), and as the Dominance War characters are supposed to be generals I wonder what general would decide to pilot a light weight, cost effective and disposable unit.
Chico: Are you going to carry the front limb's armor plating to the back legs? It would go a long way toward making this machine feel more durable. Also how does the pilot enter the vehicle? Does the canopy open up? Does the entire cockpit slide forward out from behind that front plate? However they do it, consider adding a stepping plate or a handle to grab onto. The human elements of a design go a long way toward the suspension of disbelief.
hey guys, thx for the comments
steakhouse - i am actually considering the idea of a protective shell/plate for the "thigh" of the rear leg. We'll see what i come up with.
I actually want to build some sort of "believeable" machine and I hate adding details where they dont mean anything at all( ie, what some people think of Next gen is a mass of useless rivets covering (trying to hide?) a not very interesting design...)
anyway, yeah the initial idea i had was that the mecha could be piloted by a human passenger using an interior cabin ( exactly like the appleseed mecha Dunan is controling in the movie/comic book). It could also just be a machine whose function is to be an assault vehicle/ a personal bodyguard etc...
I'll experiment a bit around those ideas - i feel like designing Hi Poly mechanics is kinda close to some sort of engine design ( i mean, you have to build something that looks like it could function)
Anyway, thx for the comments guys, I will have more soon
But the whole design is more or less complete, only some stuff ( like a proctetive plate for the legs for instance) will change
Steak: Cool, well if that's his aim he ought to cover up all the pipes that supply the fuel to the pistons and moving parts as one shot and they will burst open and stop the pistons moving I guess...
..unless he invents a fiction for why they won't explode and why the mech has all those open sections tempting someone to through a wrench into it's insides
There's not really a size comparison to it right now, but it better be huge. Not only to add to it's wickedness but 'cause then the guns will look like they have some power. And everyone enjoys huge weapons of mass destruction.
I played around a bit (when max isnt crashing...my PC is low on RAM:(
so i made the machingun bigger and covered the rear legs with some shells...I think I am done now:
I really like the design . I am crazy about appleseed/ghost in the shell meca designs . So much curves and everything fits together well . You have very intresting design process , I think I will try it someday ) Great work . Keep it up.
while its a shame to cover up all that sweet detail on the hind legs, I think this new version looks more balanced design wise. Sizing up the guns has worked well too I reckon.. inspiring work!
Out of curiosity if your going for realism and those miniguns are of the chemicaly propelled projectile variety
Where do you store the 500 to 1000 rounds nessesary to fire them for any effective period of time?
Redesign looks better, those previous side panels looked a bit flaky and thrown on at the last minute without clear thought.
It looks more refined with the new modifications on side being streamlined further and the feet seem more in line with the main organic body and leg armour so thats a win too.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with the texturing, seems like some Environment map or cube map would suit the style you lean toward in general though that would be hard to demo here without a turnaround avi.
I'd love to see this guy bound along on pins of steel that demonstrate how powerful and fast moving he can be.
Hey,
Really nice to see this one coming along nicely. I wanna make mechs of my own now--pretty inspirational stuff!
Any plans to import this into a game once it's done?

I think the sharp ridge on his back pulls down the quality though. You ought to add an extra subdivide along there
so you can transfer that smooth style of the hipoly and avoid it losing the quality of the hipoly.
ror: yeah i know about that, i will add just one more edge loop there on the low ( it was there i dunno why i got rid of it). I hope I have some free time to finish up the skin tomorrow.
Diz : yeah well this is more a personnal project so I'll keep it for me. Their stuff looks interesting tho.
Interestingly, Mr Rockstar told me that max 8 is WAY WAY better at rendering normal maps ( generating them and rendering them as well) than max 7 (that I have been using here). Maybe someone has some info regarding this?

here is it:
and the details
of the front leg leg ( a former design)
and of the rear leg here

/em bows down.
The final low poly should be around 3500-3750 tris...I have to do the rear legs and the machine guns

I'm looking forward to how you want to skin it.
