rhino is right, cgchat got me a job, but it was with a hundred polycounters. its hard to ignore that kind of influence. and while cgchat is a great place and i like lots of the people there, my allegiance lies with polycount. i know more of you guys and this place has my kind of shit talking assholes all over the place, feels more like home.
here is a fist sketch.. kind of a tripod tubby, the scribbles to his left and right will be mutantly messed up children that hold both sides of his 2 sectioned cape, i figure with a 1024 i have tones of room for extras.. more to come soon, i also i have an art test to do, the hellchick, my selfportrait, and sub-Dmodeling comp and i will finish all of them before the monthes over, and if not all of them, at least this one!! he will be getting some greeny bits for PC love.
I was linking a lot the idea of having two guys inside the armor.
The upper guy now seems a bit piggy. Is that you intention?
I like the idea of having organic legs coming out from a mech body. And that alien head you have done right down for sure is going to bit some chchatter balls!
I love it Arsh. I was thinking about doing something mounted too, so hope you're cool with me ploughing ahead with that. I love the fact that the upper guy seems a bit piggy. That's how I totally perceive generals. Overweight, mounted for a quick getaway If things get too close and sat there up on a hill on horseback giving orders from a reasonably safe distance. I think to be honest this concept feels much more like a general than most of the stuff Ive seen so far.
yeah i'm glad you're posting your in-progress pics, a lot of the time i don't feel confident enough to do that it's great to see you think through the process in the images, but more importantly give the concept enough iterations to shine before committing to model. if anything, many polycounters are just too quick to get right into the modeling stage, though of course not everyone can think most of it out beforehand. anyhow, please keep us updated, it's a great evolution.
thanks guys, i hope this all comes together into something i am happy with. i like the overall feel of the last concept, its just time for me to break it down into parts and really figure how it all works together as a whole.
Daz: glad to hear we are on the same page, you know what they say about great minds, well it must also be true for a couple of retards like ourselves.
spent a little time fleashing out the beasty head.. want to keep the feel of the shoulder pads from above.
Honestly creepy stuff, dude. I felt a shiver go down my spine... Great concept. If you can match that style in the model, you'll have no problem going up the ranks in this contest.
woo loving the concept! he seems to have gotten less imposing on the second pass, the smaller-sized mount did it i think. looks cool tho. and that general is gross
here is the final beast the general is going to ride.he is a pentapod so he can easy move in any direction as well as turn to any direction very easily. i have also fleashed out the general on paper, i need to trasfer over to my computer. the general is still a tubby bastard, but now he has the creepy long hands the beast use to. you will see next update...
Lol, super wierd. I don't know if that head design is doing it for me. I think I personally prefer the direction you were going with your original sketch as it seemed more menacing, whereas this just seems a bit outlandish and goofy. I'm sure you'll bring it to conclusion at the modeling/texturing stage, but that's my two cents.
I like the outlandish and goofy you look you have going, but I also think there are some weird design problems with him. The head and the feet mainly come to mind. Neither seem to work all that well...
thanks for crits, i agree aesir about the feet, changed them, to look more lik the rest of the suit.
i dont really get the goofy vibe at all from the piece. but many people IMed me and didnt like the head and since the concept was about the suit and not really the face i have removed it. i will do some face sketches and try to make something not so goofy.
I think it's the pear shaped body combined with all the large chunky lines. It gives it a vibe that I think most people read as goofy, even if you may not. I think one way would be to keep the chunkies and go with a more sinister body shape, or keep the body shape and lines and go with a gruesome treatment of the textures. Either way I know you'll bang out something nice.
some more....
and i dont know if his mouth is going to beable to open, i made the bottom jaw a seperate polygroup, so if it is going to beable to open it will be easy to export seperate piece for top and bottom for baking maps..

i'm all about the legs. a dirty clear plastic jacket would be sweet.
Any weapons? That jacket looks more like some kind of clear plastic pump, could be neccesary to keep his body moist or something similar.

Those shoulderpads are totally kick ass!
Keep it up!
