Finally have a few evenings to plan this things.
Its a basic skribble that will need alot of refinement. Effigy by Skullbox and Dh is the obvious inspiration, I love the little symbiotic rider and beast! I hope to intrude enough elements to this to make the peice feel unique and I'm going to push more armour into the design
Daily update :P
I lost a bunch of work on him.. due to a crash, but I am happier with the direction I have taken him in now. I started posting on the this forum when I got into Quake3.. so I think it's only fitting the 'polycount' army should have a suitably id' style creation!
Oh my, that's delectable! But I liked him better with abs. This spine thing may give him an interesting siloette, but it looks unbalanced and flimsy.
That is, however, amazing detail. If you're not satasfied with your work, you should be spanked with a rusted shovel!
CGchat seems to be predominatly more immature that I had previously speculated. They attempt to do quite frownable thatngs that we wouldn't even consider. I once considered joining thier forums, but this contest has shed some light on their community's true peronality.
Makkon, CGChat is a great community of hard-working artists. We have a few bad apples over here ourselves, but the predominant attitude on both sides is a good one. Don't let a couple of morons put you off from joining a very worthwhile forum.
Sorry about the derailage there Tim, this monster is looking awesome. Ken Scott himself would be proud.
Maybe getting away from so much symmetry in the front view (mainly the stretchies on the shoulder muscles) would make it seem a lot more organic?
In some sense the 'immature' dissing did its job:
It added more fuel to the fire and you seem to be more determined to prove yourself now(ie, make a damn good model :P)... I really like the look and feel of the model and cant wait to see it combined with the gear and the ride!
And yeah you are right Makkon, painting 6 penisses and 18 nipples on WIP images while screaming TAAAAAAAAAAACOOOOOOOOOOO TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN!!!!!!!!!!11!1 is much more mature
Hey man, it's super work, and only a small minority at cgchat were casting aspersions at the pc entries. I think most of us are super impressed by the originality and finish coming out of pc, even at this early stage in the comp.
Don't lose the fetus chest general!
Man, the proof is in the pudding, and you have pudding to spare! I wouldn't sweat it about CGchat. I think it is just a minority of folks over there with more bark than skills. What we have to worry about is the CGchatters that have more skills than bark.
Hey Spacemonkey, I think its abundantly clear that your artwork is of the highest standard, and its competitions like this one that really bring good artists out of the woodwork like yourself and many others. Apart from a few stupid individuals on both forums this is an excellent oppertunity to show off some great art and learn from the best out there. Keep up the progress on your model its looking very good so far, cant wait to see more.
Yah take it easy Tim, this is a competition between two communities, the only real good ones, whatever side they are in, will be the ones that will finish their entry...but anyways, your model is id inspired, and what ?? is that bad ? there are only a few people on both communities that can reach doom3 art level, so I say that nobody can blame you from being inspired from the best. plus your model rocks.
So now you'd better get your arse moved and finish it !!
and of course I don't think it puts down the overall work here, man, it really looks awesome, and I think it's a very good tribute to id.
edit : oh yah, and of course, I entered a few of the cgchat comps, and these guys are both skilled and nice people, but as every communities, they have stupid people/flamers...we also have ours. Take it more like joking and such..
The nature of the competition can make this happen, but in the end the things that will stay will be how fun that was and how many people this comp managed to gather...
speaking of this, instead of some stupid joke threads, maybe crating a "spy report thread" on each side, where guys from the other forum post their work without it being commented ( but can put a link to the thread for comments though) somehow like the what are you working on thread...dunno...
my main concern with the comments was that they were aimed at ALL polycount.. I can personnal criticism and people making tormenting each other is nothing to comment on.
No one would want their work to be the focus of jibes against the entire community.. which is what annoyed me. People can come in this thread and say TOO MUCH DOOM, get a real design, etc.. it was just that they used it to attack the community. I didnt like that as I respect the creativity of everyone here.. so that is why I commented. I think the competition is great and I issued some challenges to the guys shooting their mouths off.. in the spirit of the competition
I'll address some of the issues people have raised about the model/design soon, I need to block more of the mech stuff in max right now
Very respectable that you did so spacemonkey.
I agree about the spine, I say cover it up with some muscles and guts. The hips are boxy, maybe smoothen those out?
spacemonkey I think you took offense to what I said a little to far, I was very mild in even saying that your work was very Doom3 inspired :P ps did you like my ava animations?
crits: I think it looked better with a muscular gut, everything else is cool. I especially like what you did with this dudes mouth, ya know without the jaw and all. great job
Just some low res meshes in max to help give him substance.
okkun - I hope the mechanical parts help to clear things up, I'm pretty concious that I have to make this fit 5k polies.. and I want to try and make the low mesh as smooth as I can
Makkon, marine, cep !- I thought it would be fun.. at first.. now I have been regretting adding the spine, I will be reworking at as it didnt acheive the effect I wanted.
cep - yeah the hips are boxy, I stil have work to do their ... I need to play in zeebrush more
MoP - totally valid and I do agree.. but I am hesitant due to the fact that I want to retian as much detail as possible .. so I think mirrored uv's as much as possible using other details to break the symmetry.
kite - he's back in a differnt form, still playing with idea's for him though!
alhanzo - I changed the gut because I felt it was too similair to existing creatures.. I wanted to express the fact that this creature is dead, an animated Carcass There area will be getting some attention - as I already mentioned in another response
Vahl, Psyk0, Spoon_of_death, Ninjas, solar and moose! Thanks
I think I get everyone.. !
I think I need to play with the head shape on the big carcass... it doesnt feel right yet, maybe increase the size of certain features so that it works better at this distance.. C&c encouraged
ok solidified the gun aspect, its still only a mid poly demon riding the gun. I tried to keep most of the elements on the gun chunky, since the low texture res will pick up a tremendous amount of detail (considering that he has alot of surface area to be mapped)
$!nz , Daz, lkraan, gavku, Valandar, MoP, -kube-, Lee3dee and Psyk0 Thanks for the encouragement! I'm glad everyone is enjoying the gun demons!!
okkun - its a bit cheap but I know its going to be tough to finish a normal mapped character for this comp.. so yeah I have to make some sacrifices
TEX - the little guy is planned to be the general, I havent finished working with him yet.. I want it to be clear when its finished who is in charge.. so more work to come on that.

old:
newer revision;
see my AMAZING SKETCH WORK!! OH YEAH
Maybe arms too... all deformed but that would rock.
Wow i really love the design. What a concept!
Speaking of the newer revision.
a quick start in zeebrush
nice start man, though possibly the edge under his pecs is a little hard?
face is looking nice and evil
keep it up
Rockstar, if someone wants the concepts for this competition thats fine It would be cool to see people build on them..as I intended, ha!

keep up the great work man
Thanks guys, ya still going.. its all about the id style:)
Slap a black material on it and look at the silouettes. The details and muscle structure looks good but the overall shape is pretty soft.

It annoys me that my id inspired entry should be used in such a way.. to reflect negatively on everyone else here!!
I'm sure most of them are sh****** their pants when they see your work and others.
Disclaimer: the above statement is meant in a joke so dont start flaming me if you're from cgchat :P.
Dig the work you have done so far.

I'll second that statment!
