This is the sweet spot for your low-poly models. Post 'em if you've got 'em!Low-poly hasn't really been a requirement in the games industry for a long while now. This thread is for low-poly art style appreciation, so please take note of these rough guidelines:
- Keep models under 1,000 triangles.
- Scenes are fine, if all models are low poly.
Some dedicated low-poly modelling tools now exist that make this art style a lot easier to produce;

Nice start.
EDIT: Better?
EDIT: oh btw, ~250 tris, 128x128px (the somewhat high tri count is cause the mouth is openable
Also, the skin looks somewhat monochromatic. Maybe play around with the hues a bit more.
oh snap!
All models were under 200 polys (we went by polys back then) and use a 128x128 texture- except for venom who uses a 128x64 and the fold reaver which uses a 64x64. Looking back on it all now, there's a couple changes I would've made, but I didn't think it was bad for being the second game I worked on.
The fold reaver was my favorite maybe it was the challenge that made it so.
So basically the other night I decided I'd give this whole thing a shot, with basically just the knowledge I have. Didn't turn out so well. I was really inspired by the user "Tennis" on here, and I loved all his low-poly cars with that retro look. I decided I'd make a car. Out of random I picked the Mazda RX8. Bad choice? I don't know. Regardless I made the mesh, which was this:
I don't know if this is perhaps I started to go wrong with the mesh even? It's just a block I extruded and vertexed a bit to match the size and basic shape, then triangulated.
Afterword, I made my UV, which is admittedly probably all sorts of wrong and will make some of you sick.
Yeah. Anyways, then I was trying to decide how to actually detail this. So I got into Photoshop, and copy-pasted a blueprint of the side of the RX8, shrunk it down and sort of hand painted it with a 1x1 pencil tool. After a big I was "done" with it, and I decided to do the top. I was feeling experimental so I decided to mess with gradients and such to see how it looked. Looks like shit. Here's the mess.
Yeah, I hate it.
So basically I stopped. I don't know where to start right and what to do. And I hate Maya because it blurs the the pixels and I want to see it without the aliasing. Does anyone know how to turn that off, even in renders?
I really need help, so if anyone has any pointers or has the time to help me out and type out a list of tips I'd really appreciate it. Thanks guys. You're all an inspiration and I strive to be like you all!
and now ?:)
To be honest, yeah, you're doing it wrong... But it's not hard. You'll get it soon.
Take a look at this car I made:
112 tris. Look at the shape. Yours don't have any, both sides are plain flat. If you want to make a flat car, might as well use a single plane with an alpha. Would save you 10 tris on each side.
When doing such low spec models as these, you have to pack your uvs as tight as possible. Don't be afraid to use a slightly bigger texture.
What is that black and red striped thing on your uv? And that plain black piece? I just don't see that on your model and yet it's taking such a huge space in the uv... Keep texture resolution consistent!
- Don't texture it two different ways. You've got "crisp" pixels on the side (you really should turn off filtering if you're going to do it that way, in my opinion) and gradients on the top. Keep it consistent throughout the model.
- The undercarriage has many wasted polys. You can weld all those edges on the bottom to the front and back edges.
- When presenting, take a smaller screenshot (by zooming away from your model, not scaling it down in Photoshop). It makes things easier to read. You're making a low resolution model, might as well present it that way, no?
Additional loops on Carl are for animation.
300 tris, and a horrible uv layout (did the texture before the model, lol)

I plan on creating a dutch race course with old dutch farmer houses, typical road trees and fences.
with orange window shades
I like it otherwise though, keep up the good work.
