all of these new apps and not a single one has caught onto the greatest modeling premise ever.
DRAW EDGE LOOP! Freehand a spline in an ortho view, lil menu pops up after your done, and asks for iterations, smoothing, divisions etc. click build, and boom. 2-3 seconds to start the major loops. bah.
ok,ok.. silo has the topology brush, but thats for already exsisting geometry.
Hey cheapie: guess whos a fucking idiot? Yes thats right, you are. Can you hurry up and get unbanned already? I think someone might take this post the wrong way, i'de rather jsut harrass you in real-time.
with today's tiny dvd-size game box design it doesn't allow for much cool design opportunities anymore not much reason to do a big box if you're not going to stick a fat manual in it anyway
I don't really get it. Seven hundred bucks seems like a lot for just a modeler and renderer. Can't you get a full animation suite for less than that? Does Modo have any features that you can't find in another package?
It is a nice box, though (Especially the Poop edition).
zcubed: maybe you should try the demo then? http://www.luxology.com I wont try and say its the best program out there for everyone but nearly every person i've talked to thats given it serious consideration will tell you that its hands down the best pure modeling tool there is out there. We're using XSI for everything else (rigging, animation, level design, ect) funny thing is that zbrush + modo + xsi is still cheaper than a single copy of max, which is what we were using before. I just cant wait until 2.01, which rumor has it is a while off still =(
Sure, I suppose I've got nothing to lose by trying out a new tool. My Silo demo is going to expire soon anyways. It'll have to be very impressive to warrant costing seven times as much as Silo, but I'm certainly not going to rule it out. Modeling and texturing is really all I'm interested in at the moment, so it might be worth the purchase if the toolset is as sharp as you say it is.
Well just keep in mind you get a free upgrade to 2.01 when it comes out as well. But if you're only looking to spend $100 silo is probably going to be your best choice.
After trying both, I can honestly say Modo is definately not seven times better than Silo. I personally like Silo even more than Modo, but I'm sure that's up to a persons individual tastes. I just think if you have an individual's wallet and not a corporation's, Silo is for you.
Yeah, after thinking it over I'm going to agree with Poop. That's really too much money for a hobbyist to spend on modeling tools that are at-best only marginally stronger than the competition. To be honest, I never really find myself straying far from the most basic operations (Extrude, Weld, Cut). The UV tools just look like Wings' Auto UV calculated in real time.
Too bad, I was having a lot of fun spinning around in the viewport. Alt + RMB seems to make your viewport tumble until you run out of momentum .
Thanks for the help, sorry if I stole your thread .

Yes, heaven forbid this topic should have some real, useful discussion in it, what a tangent to go off on XD
As for Modo, I tried it when it first came out and didn't see anything I had to have-- but that's me. For those who swear by it, good for them, they found a package they like. I shudder to think about all the people that must be modeling with unmodified Maya tools or what have you
IMO the best part of modo is its workflow and UI, you can find more or less the same tools in every 3d app for the most part but its the way they actually work that i love. Our other 2d/3d guy here who has used max for a LONG time got easily comfortable with modo within a few days, but again i wont say its the best for everyone. You should try it and see for yourself if you like it or not.
I'm planning on getting it, since I make the "good student" pricing deal, which'll get me modo and the free upgrade for only 99 buckaroos. That, and I'm not sure if I want Lightwave 9 or not,I may just stick with 8 and use modo for modeling and LW if I need it for exporting to something.
They're completely different animals. Modo seems horribly overpriced to me, but I haven't used it long enough to make any sort of proper judgment. I'm really enjoying Silo though, it's very quick and customizable.

And paper CD wallets are just cheap!

(oh cmon someone had to make that pun)
then again the blender box would look like flash because of the similar ripcord thing.

hahaha arsh: you wouldnt know a good UI if it licked your asshole while you were fucking your sister.

your right, i wouldn't, but i do know that a $700 program won't make someone that sucks good at modeling.

Um back on topic...
Yeah. Nice box.
It is really never getting old, is it?
What modeling features do you enjoy in Modo? After, 8 years of using 3D Max it's hard to get past the interface of another program.
