You're right, I would lose. Mostly because the courts are so bogged down with much larger and more pressing issues. But that doesn't mean you are protected under free speach to make fause claims about the make up of someones character. Because the legal system isn't adaquitly equiped to deal with certain problems and often over looks them, doesn't mean you are obeying the law or even protected by it.
Is speeding illegal only if you get caught? No, it is always illegal. Are you guilty of speeding only when you get caught? No, you are guilty each time you speed. Don't confuse the lack of punishment with the right to do something illegal.

You got to look at it from a different perspective to understand where this violent backlash stems. Western culture is interested in the middle east oil resource and as a result destabilizes the region. In my opinion, that's the root of the problem.
Selling weapons to both Iran and Iraq during a 10 year war...these are the real reasons Muslims are so pissed off. Turning someone's home to rubble, blowing up a pakistani town cuz "oops! we thought terrorists were lurkin' round."
These cartoons are just the last straw. So don't come off like we're guilty of nothing, cuz it's short-sighted and naive.

This modern idea that you can stand on a street corner shouting hate messages or whatever you want, at the top of your lungs and not having any concequences for your words or actions, is mostly wrong.
I view the cartoons as the bratting younger brother in the back seat of a car with his finger inches away from his older sisters eye. The parents need to be parents to step in and tell the kids to be quite. The religous leaders need to not fan the flames and the goverments need to pressure but not restrict the press to stop printing inflamitory things. Maybe they can post them on web where you have to register and log in to see them? But then that doesn't sell papers does it...
My point was that we do have a legal system for handling these exact problems. Why didn't they just sue the newspaper?

The US Gov. was founded "of, by, and for.." the people which to me is an idea that doesn't require "daddy" government to tell us how to think. I think we found out what can piss off all of Islam and it might be best to try avoiding that, if anything just for good manners' sake. Its funny, i used to think of muslims as smart people who wanted peace. Now when i think of muslims i think of mindless folowers looking to kill any who think diffrent from them. I think that muslims need to have a jihad of all your extreemists. Then you could go back to having a good name as the peacefull religion.
People judge things by the best and worst things they do. You know like your portfolio. Rite now all they see is a whole lot of bad comming from that religion. Another thing would be to translate the koran so that people everywhere can read it and so no one will think its evil and will see that its the people who are evil.
People fear and make fun of what they dont understand so let them understand and they will not make fun of you as much. Dont hate the guy who makes fun of you for making fun of you feel bad for him because he is ignorant.

No actually the real reason is for the reason I mentioned above. Slander defamation of character and even libel are actual legal terms people have and will continue to use in law suits. By the legal definition of slander you could be sued for saying such things. You even suggest that this is the course of action the muslims take do you not? If you don't believe someone can successfully sue someone over defamation of character then you are really telling the angry Muslims to F-off and take the one course of action you believe to fail.
I am the last guy to support crazy people blowing up innocent people as a way to start a dialog. I really strongly believe that the US would not be in the middle east doing what it is today (to the level it is), if two towers in NY didn't fall to the ground. Slamming planes into buildings, blowing things up and waging holy war is not a way to start a dialog. Before 9/11 most of America had never heard of or cared that much about Islam. If they tried to educate us to their plight before 9/11 the failed miserably. In a nation that is open to religion of any kind (especially before 9/11) they could have tried the peaceful method of education. But that takes time and it's not what that brand of Islam believes.
I also think it is pretty stupid to print something that pisses someone off even if you think its funny. I think it is more stupid find out that it really pissed that person off then print MORE NEW material that follows the same vein as the first. Then tell them to quite down. When was the last time anyone angry actually calmed down when someone asked? All it does is piss them off.
Hey that sold an ass load of papers lets toss this gas on the fire and see if we can sell more. It has less to do with freedom of speech and more with what sells. Bad press is still press.

We call it liberation but they call it opression, much like British emperialism started out to bring civilization to the world. Are we right to force democracy on a world that doesn't want it in the name of our own safety?
The government should have the right to ASK you to not make an ass out of yourself and tell you that it could be bad. They shouldn't have the right to imprison you, beat you, or otherwise detain you if you choose to do go ahead and say such things. Likewise they should not protect you if your actions/words bring about equal consequences. If those consequences tip the other way above equal then they (or anyone else) should intervene.
Yeah, Vig, I already read up on that. To have a case you have to show that the untrue thing said caused you some type of harm. Maybe mental anguish because it pissed you off? I mean, you could sue, you would have a case, but in most courts I think you would lose.
And you are right. There is a system, and in that system the islamic extremists would lose their case (since they would have to prove that Muhammud was a real person and that they had the legal right to represent his estate). Oh well, guess it would be time then to hire some lobbiests. Maybe they can get some laws changed. That is how the system works. It is called democracy, and it doesn't involve an angry mob burning down buildings.

Also, in the west we have a tendancy of burning cars after a college sports games, or rioting against other football fans, but you know, that's ok because we're civilised.
After doing a GIS of football riot, someone should really do a collection of football riot/middle eastern protest photos, and have you guess which is which.
Funny, the biggest serries of blown calls in modern american sports in recent memory happened last Sunday durring the mother of all football sporting events, the supperbowl. And yet not a single riot. Seattle, the home of the WTO roit of 99 aka the Battle in Seattle, is still standing and not a single car was set on fire. Or any property damage done.

and with that said I think the thread is officially beaten to death. After all Hawk did bring up the Nazis on page 3 and according to the modern interpretation of Goodwin's Law all rational thought stopped existing after that post.

Not to be an asshole here, but people are dead over this comic. It's not always about being right or wrong, people's lives could have been saved with a simple apology. It's one public sentance, where you don't even admit you were wrong, you just apologize for the disruption it caused.

Absofuckinglutely NOT.
The only person to blame for the results of "Do this or I kill you" is the person who did the killing. Period.
I don't care if it is slander or if it IS illegal, it's still not going to get you out of property damage and murder.

I was talking about soccer, friend. I am a foreigner. But thanks for being a prick. : \

It's a good thing we take our soccer very seriously over here in America, being the most civilized and all.

I think he was making the same point I was, that soccer(football) fans outside of the us are a pretty dangerous crowd. I think he was saying that soccer roits look a lot like the protests we have seen recently. But of course he said football so that confused the hell out of me when I saw he was posting from the us under his name. Being from the US and all I assumed football means the lame kind (pad and helmets) and that he was talking about football fans rioting when they really don't.
I'm confused (and a prick), hes embarrased for something and this thread is going no where... WEE
Not like there aren't any holocaust jokes out there...
"Yeah, my granddad died in a concentration camp. Got drunk and fell off the guard tower." (we used that to anger a catholic religion teacher that was very fond of Ratzinger)
