This is something im working on for a mini comp over at www.cgchat.com its psp/nds spec recreation of a computer games character (512 tris, 256 texture).. think im gonna go for a slightly darker look
Tip: Set a camera to the correct distance that will best represent the size of your character on screen. It'll help a lot in figuring out where you need to add/take away your polygons. Your sprite art seems like a good size.
oh yea bro, no worries...my comment wasn't really a total crit...although i like to see stuff that is "complete," stuff like this is awesome too, and looks fairly good, as you did
cheers guys.. ok reason for open geometry is portable consoles like the ds cant handle bones and other advants stuff like that so this type of geometry would animate beter (its given that this model would be to heavy and has to big a texture for ds and psp but hey about the spikes yehh if i make the 3 sided i could add some more tris elswhere! like the tail spikes.. cheers
well, you could have him boned.... I'm 99% sure that mario 64DS have boned main characters, and I'm guessing a 128x128 texture for them spread over several 8 colour textures...
good work so far though, he is recognisably King Koopa/Bowser
Hm, I remember hearing claims that bones are actually less ressource draining than vertex animation (less animation data, one matrix transformation per bone rather than one linear interpolation per vertex) and consoles cannot handle vertex animation but I guess that was talking about current gen...
it is only a comp... im not actualy going to put it on the machine.. it save me some polys to model it like this, and i only had 512. but yehh your probably right.
looks really cool, but he looks more like a teenage koopa, not really the king yet. i think hes a bit too trimmed down. definatly cool, i have just always thought of koopa as a big chunck of mass.
i think im gonna add to this once its finnished mabey give him another 64*64 for a fire ball and mouth.. here what i did tonight... to tired to finnish it just now.. too much work still to do.
nope no polies left sorry mate... although once its been juged for the comp im gonna add another 64*64 for extra details , fireball and mouth... and i may add those extra pollys too cheers
Perhaps a few scratches on the shell or chest would work?
The claws on the hind legs need to be modeled. Bowser is pretty much a dragon with a shell, he has big, clawed feet (and clawed hands...). Take one edge off every spike or something but model his claws.
I'd say throw some darker darks and lighter lights in his shellwork. It'd make the individual scales pop a bit more. As they are now, they look a bit shallow and thin. Like they wouldn't really protect him, much.

-Soul, i like the feet idea, but i dont really want to loose any polys in his shell...
-Shady, Ill get the stomach done once i get the general mass painted in.. not sure about the tats though.. ill try it and see what it looks like!
Thanks again guys

I always say that but hEY! when it POP! it win!
b1llly
Just move the front bottom vertex forward until the edge slopes forward and not backwards.
and yeah if B1ll suggests more contrast I'd listen to the man.

Only if you want some over contrast, over pixelated b1ll lookalike crap, that somehow still looks amazingly well done

Yeah one of those!
B1ll - yes deffinatly! the contrast in all the parts bellow the head is not good enough and the colours need work still.
JKMakowka - about making the feet slope back.. i disagree i think this would make him look clumsy and less sleek.
Steakhouse - i know what you mean about the yellow as the origional did but iv been experimenting with some yellows and i didnt like it..
KDR_11k - yehh totaly about the scratches thats a great idea im gonna do cracks in the shell where the spikes are comming through.
Xenobond - yep
The3DGuy - cheers mate
hey thanks for all the help guys !!
