Is there any way this can be done, or failing that is there a feasible workaround?

Use the Hardware renderer. If the vertex color is displaying in the viewport, the hardware renderer will render it.

Hardware renderer doesn't do alpha sorting properly and I've got mountains of alpha maps in my scene.

There is a really sketchy shader that only seems to half work for mentalray. You can google vertex shader mentalray.
