2) Man made islands have a tendancy to keep sinking into the sea as the soil continues to compact and or erode away.
Once you build on the island its kind of hard to put more dirt under the building.

Well I'm sure the scientists working for those putting money into this $1.8 billion project have thought of that, and maybe even come up with a workaround.

One would think so, but that isn't the case. At least not during their first project. I think someone already mentioned the Palm islands they made. The current didn't flow as expected though and they had some real erosion issues. Supposedly they fixed it, and then started this project. Only time will really tell if they did this right
Doesn't matter. I don't have the money to throw away like that
I'm sure the scientists working on the Kansai International Airport knew it would sink 8 meters more than "predicted". They just like to pretend they didn't know it was going to happen.
By then, the island had sunk 8 meters (far more than predicted) and the project became the most expensive civil works project in modern history after 20 years of planning, 3 years of construction and several billion dollars of investment.

The total cost of Kansai Airport so far is $15 billion, which is 40% over budget (mostly due to the sinking problem). The airport is still deeply in debt, losing $560 million in interest every year. Airlines have been kept away by high landing fees (approximately $7500 for a Boeing 747), the second most expensive in the world after Narita's.
ya, we may as well go play our video games and use our expensive computers and other such toys in somolia also, the point at which normal spending becomes gluttony, is always slightly above the spending point of the person making the statement, if i had many bucks i would not feel bad about buying an island with it.

Id totally build a small army and invade the other Island/countries!

That's the spirit- who's up for joining the Great Army of Antartica? We'll systematically conquer the other rich inhabitants and form a new "world-island" order!
If I could afford to buy an island, I'd fuckin' buy one, an unfortunate use of money or not!
I'd buy Iceland. I'd sit in the middle of my island while wearing fourty-six pounds of Goretex, chemical hand warmers and wool, contemplating the Arabian sun and looking very sad. People would sail past my island just to look at me.
Then I'd sue the developers for misleading me in my bid to reclaim my mighty Norse heritage, and they'd settle for three times the amount I paid for Iceland. The next day, I'd buy Denmark, the Netherlands and Britain. Rinse and repeat. While the rest of you are fighting amongst yourselves like little children, I will creep from island to island like a world-devouring cancer, and enslave you all in the iron fist of my unstoppable economic victory.

I've got first dibs on Outer Mongolia!
I see they've considered security too. I was gonna say, If a bunch of rich westerners end up buying a lot of that that's prime pickings for Al Quaeda!
Very spooky to watch the vid, as DaZ said. Looks very fake.
Plain creepy.
Here's an outdate google map of Dubai.

The first group of 3 palm islands being built:

They just began contruction on the largest group of palm islands. That's a lot of artificial islands. This is all just insane.
Looks like a Risk board. Or a Total Annihilation map.

hey! that's a great idea! they should get groups of people on every island, give them foam bats, and see who wins.
good place to breakup any incoming tsunami

of course the people living there are so rich they will have jetpacks to evade the tsunami.

Gluttony has reached an all-time peek. They should have built this off the coat of Somalia.
