Hey all, spent the last few days updating my page with tons of content (Age of Empires 3, Counterstrike, Elite Force 2 and WIP stuff)
Heres some choice work from Age 3, All modeled and textured by me. Theres much more on my site along with most the stuff I did while I worked at Ritual Entertainment that I just now got around to uploading. http://www.horribledeath.com/2d3d.htm
Anyways, that's just a taste theres plenty more on my site.
Freaking awesome...and with normal mapping goodness. In an RTS even! Nice amount of detail in everything, including in the armor of the (spanish)? troop at the top...and in all the mini buildings and ships.
wow great work mate! Cool stuff, really like the good usage of the normalmaps, the other stuff, CS EF2 is great too. Keep up the good work. I always enjoy looking at your art.
The Normal Maps do look nice, especially for being painted normal maps (I'm almsot positive they are painted, and not generated from a high poly model).
Nice,nice DH!
You probably don't remember me.
6+ months ago I think I emailed you asking for a tutorial to make something like your megnelda(bad spelling) and what type of wacom to get.
I actualy Tried remaking your magnellda on a realy low polygon model(about 350 tris) and with a 4 year old rts engine. It came out amazingl good.If you wan't(wich you don't ) I'll show it to you on msn.
But anyways...
Fantastic detail!
Came out realy sharp.
I didn't know you could paint normal maps...you gotta' make a tutorial for that too...
Bravo for these and for updating your site.

I'd say the normal maps are defineatly hand-painted. I'm surprised it came out looking so damn good though! Defineatly the best work I've seen in a long time. Great stuff, Dark.
Yeah, the normal-maps are obviously mostly hand-made, and very well done.
However, the parts I'm wondering about are the sails on the ships - were those normal-maps hand painted too, or did you make some quick mock-up geometry and render down from that? It seems like it'd be a waste of time trying to greyscale->convert a painted map for those parts... DH?
Sweeetnesss. Honestly, I've never seen your 'normal' work, DH, so this is a pleasant surprise. Amazing. As everyone says, these are gorgeous, and the wireframes with normalmaps are particularly enlightening.

Looks great but why paint spec for only metal/jewelry?

In my experience normal maps make flesh and cloth look plasticy enough as is, adding spec just helps that, which i wanted to avoid .

yea the majority of what we did for age3 was hand painted normals, the sails too, which was actually pretty easy. I did some high poly generated characters but they didn't render out so well since max doesn't render normal maps, so until max does render normals, they wont be on my site.
Im really impressed with the results of your handpainted normal maps... Wouldnt have thought it would turn out so well without using a high poly model and rendering the normals off of that. I'll definitely have to give that a go.
Anyways, great work, not that I would have expected anything else from ya

Now that I look closer at it...how did they manage to get a normal map to function properly on things like those boat sails?

not sure i understand about the boat sails, I just put the normal maps on the mesh, unless I'm missing something.
Everything looks really great, good job.
