Well, you were roughly on the right track. If I remember right, it just means that girls and guys get given random numbers on a piece of paper stuck to them, and if you see someone you fancy, just make a note of their number, and leave a message for them at the DJ booth, which then either gets read out, or you go and collect it... something like that. And so on.
