Ok I tried to install some software both from a disk and from one harddrive to another and I get 'Error performing inpage operation.' I'm using Win2000, microsoft says it a problem with the media but I get the error even when trying to install a driver on my main drive from my main drive. Think my main drive is dieing or is it just time to reinstall?

Good News: Since I work in tech support I run into this kind of error pretty often.
Bad News: There isn't one solid fix for it. And i have not see that exact error before.

However most of the time that kind of error pops up durring install it's a currupt compressed file such as zip, rar, or install file. I see it the most with installshield products. If you have downloaded the file from somewhere else and it still gives you that error try extracting the files using another program like winrar then install the driver manually using device manager.

I have seen it be some curruption in the OS but that is pretty rare. When it is the OS it is almost always caused by some kind of virus or someone who likes to tinker in the registry. Like I said OS curruption causing this is pretty rare, BUT sometimes clearing the HD and starting fresh gets rid of whatever the problem is even tho its an extreme step it should fix the problem.

If you do go that far I normally suggest making a seperate small partition for your C:\ drive and the rest of the space be partitioned into a storage drive. That way when you do hit "bumps" with the OS you can whipe only the C drive and leave the rest of your data intact. Some programs installed to the storage drive, might stop working because the registry is normally stored on the same drive as the OS. However some programs like photoshop and most games work fine and write new registry settings/keys when you start them up for the first time after the OS has been reinstalled.

Yeah I'm getting the error with a used but pristine copy of Baldurs Gate 2 and from the newest radeon driver(both install shield).
I already do keep my os on it's own drive but I've had things disappear on other drives for seemly no reason durring install so I'm backing up the best I can now, I'll try your method but I've had funny results trying to install a game from the harddrive when I had a crap dvd drive once.

Seems I had that rare corruption in the os, nothing fixed it but I reinstalled and now have a clean machine, thanks anyway.
