This used to be a topic on the boards before the crash that I would often refer to, but I didn't link it, and I think the method has changed since Maya6. So can anyone detail the steps needed to make a Vertex baked lighting textures in Maya to use as a layer on Photoshop... like I used to do in max.

Display>>Custom Polygon Display (option box)
Make sure that "Color in Shaded Display" is checked. This will make vertex color show up in the viewport instead of diffuse color.
Setup your lights, select your object then go to Edit Polygons>>Colors>>Prelight. I've never used anything but Maya software for vertex color. Mental ray is there too, but I'm not sure what advantages it has over software. When thats done you should see your baked color on the object. Now select your object, then go to Edit Polygons>>Colors>>Paint Vertex Color Tool(option box) Then open up the Attribute Maps menu, Export. Here you can pick your map resolution, image format ect... when you save out the map, you will have your baked light texture.
