ya think marketing chose the name "XBOX 360" so an "XBOX 2" would not sound inferior to a "playstation 3"?

    that gaming console looks hugemungus.

cool. I'm likin the design on this one. Anything beats that big ass black box. I'm really looking forward to the may 12th MTV show so I can get a glimpse of this thing in action. After that I begin the wait to see what the big N is gonna show at E3. I hope they can reclaim a chunk of the console market this time around.

and i think it looks like that xbox sphere in the middle of the controller spins, so playing games like monekey balls can utilize that kind of controller.

personally, i like the design.. i can only hope the next playstation is like the new ps2-mini, cause the original ps2 was a huge waste of space.. and granted the xbox was *big*, almost all the interior space is used up, with space only left for cooling... the way i see it, microsoft had the better design.

Aren't all consoles essentially PCs? CPU, GPU, RAM, etc. The Xbox does have an x86 processor, but I don't see why that makes it any less of a console. I usually hear the whole "DUUURRRRR XBOX IS JUST A PC" argument from Sony fanboys who have a console-inferiority complex. "The Xbox may be way more powerful than the PS2, but it's not really a console so it doesn't count." Whatever icon15.gif.

The game controller looks to have been changed. the black and white buttons have been moved to above the triggers (think the z button on the gamecube controller).

I personally like the new look. only worry/concern I have is do they stay clean? that's the thing with black it's hard to notice dirt. although cheesy poof stains stay no matter the shade they use.

i like that the xbox controler seems the same shape and layout as the original "s" controler, i like the xbox controler, i like that they moved the start an select buttons so they are not so easy to accidently press, i do not see the white / black buttons tho maybe they thought they were not utilized as much as they should have

i think it looks ok, but honestly it could look like a pile of turd as long as it was able to play awesome games,

I never get the xbox is just a pc argument, i mean i hook it up to my tv, i play games on it with controlers, sounds like a game console to me. i've yet to do my taxes, or email my grandma on it, or down load porn.

That was a pretty stupid statement. All consoles are basically PCs, and every new console will pretty much be a computer. What exactly is wrong with it being "just a computer"?

It doesn't have cell technology, that's the PS3. It's a triple core 3ghz modified PowerPC processor (which is why the dev kit is pretty much a Mac).

The white and black buttons have moved to the shoulders. The triggers are in the same place. Kinda like the GameCube's Z button, only on both sides.

I think the X logo in the middle is a tilt sensor.

It's good that they've kept the triggers, I was a little worried they'd change them for normal shoulder buttons.

I'm not sure about the white and black button placement though, that's one of the things I dislike about the PS2 controller. I'll have to have a go myself before I make up my mind about that one.

Still, overall it looks like a sexy piece of kit, something that certainly won't hinder Xbox's chances against the PS3.

I have a feeling Microsoft will put up a serious challenge to Sony this time, they've obviously learned a lot about console design the first time around, so we'll have to see what else they've learned.

Another rumour about the middle sphere is that it is a 'Live' button, allowing access to friends lists and such at all times.

I'm liking the look. It's clean and swoopy. I liked the original PS1, didn't like the original PS2, xbox's looks I can take or leave. Love my dinky GC

what is this fucking XNA technology i keep reading about? is it worth bragging about?

google defines XNA as: "XNA is a proposed successor to DirectX, uniting varied game development API's into a common framework. XNA was announced March 24, 2004, at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California."

so it's just coded tools and programs that make developing games easier? is that it? it's like an operating system for creating games, maybe?
i've read it being listed as an advantage for XBOX360 over the other gaming consoles, but the others MUST have their own development tools. i don't get it, what am i missing here?

XNA is just that - it makes you have the same tools for PC and XBOX dev. It's a pipelining process, removing the need for lots of boring bits of coding and art.

i BELEIVE it will standardise file formats and stuff - you hit the export button in max and out pops a game ready model that slots right intot he pipeline. The coders know exactly how to access it and its propties. Or something.

thanks imag. k, so XNA stands for: X="cross-section of powerful microsoft technologies' N= 'next-gen' and A= 'architecture', eh? .. screw it.

i so love how microsoft takes a shot at sony in their faq.

    [ QUOTE ]
Q: What's the difference between Microsoft's XNA and Sony's Cell?
A: In the next generation, software-not hardware-will drive the games industry forward. Microsoft XNA software brings together chip and OEM partners to ultimately deliver thousands of integrated digital entertainment devices that work together and give consumers choice. Sony is talking about a fixed world of hardware that requires everyone to buy everything Sony. Sony's Cell is a hardware solution. This is a software revolution.

The hardware looks fancy and the controller looks good (very simlar to the current one which I like).

More important... how much will it costs and do I need to spend another $100 to modify it into a region free box/dvd-player.
I hope the 360 will have all the media player goodness build into it standard that my modded box has.

The cell chips don't really own anything.
It's a nice idea, but in practice it'll be a bitch to implement, to code for, and I suspect it will be quite expensive to start with.

XNA on the other hand will be a pretty standard format, based on something damn near every programmer already knows, and much easier to program for.

What this means in real terms, is that it will be cheaper and easier for companies to develop for Xbox than for PlayStation, and indeed some publishers have stated as such.

It's unlikely to be region free - software and dvd people like regions to control prices.

The reason the xbox didnt have dvd playing built in as standard, is, to my knowledge a profit % thing. As a manufacturer you have to pay a % of the hardware cost of a dvd player to someone.

By purchasing a dvd controller for 20, thats the hardware you pay the % cost on.

But that might be utter shite.

Yeah Rick, that's how I had it explained to me in both Game and Gamestation when I worked in those places.

If the Xbox had it built in, it would actually be more expensive since they'd have to incorporate the extra cost into the unit price.

First off, "Xbox360" is the worst name EVER. I mean, what the hell? It's like, Xbox3, but 60 times cooler???? It's the most retarded name since Virtual Boy. Why not just Xbox2? Grr..
    /rant

Onto the controller now, I think it looks great. The b/w buttons ARE in a odd location, but I'm willing to give it a shot. What concerns me are the "1,2,3,4" digits that surround the "orb" on the controller. I hope that it's not some sort of roller-button. Too unique, if so.

The system itself looks very sleek though. I like the new compact design of thing, though the HUGE power/reset button is annoying me. I also preferred the brushed metal-esque look of the earlier "leaked" system pics. Polished white is fine I suppose, but it's just not the same. The removable HD is also a nice feature.

In the end though, it's about what the system can do. Hopefully MS put together another great machine.
