You can try out Maya PLE (Personal Learning Edition) or GMAX. They are free versions of Maya and 3D Studio Max. I'm at work and polycount seems to be the only website I can get to but do a google search for those programs and you'll find them.

New to modelling... and grammar! (Seriously, that was hard to read).

Industry standard applications are either 3DStudio Max or Maya. If you go the 3DStudio Max route there'll be some tutorials for beginners included with the package that you can check out. Once you get the basics done you can find some video tutorials at www.poopinmymouth.com (Yes thats the URL).

Unfortunately I know nothing about Maya - but I'm sure someone with the proper knowledge will read this and point you in the proper direction.

    Maya PLE
    gmax

Something to remember: Any 3D package, whether it be Max, Maya, milkshape, etc will have a high learning curve off the get-go. It had taken me a good 2-3 months to grasp just the basics of Max and feel comfortable enough to move on. I'm sure some will learn faster than others, but if you're not picking it up right away don't be discouraged. If its something you really want to get your hands dirty with those first few months will go by quickly.

    Good luck and have fun.

XSI: ModTool now supports the ActorX plugin and with it the Unreal series. for more free/low cost programs, some may or may not support UT, look at the sticky thread near the top of the forum.

    for tutorials go here: http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/resources/unreal/index.shtml

I believe I answered you in this thread sonny

Most UT99 modelers used Max, and I don't think there's legacy PSK support for Maya and any newer modeler.

www.blender.org is the most complete package available for free, GMAX and PLE are hampered by restrictions put in place to make them inferior to the full-priced packages (such as bad plugin support). PLE has that annoying watermark and GMAX can't render (good for previews). I'm not sure what MAX version GMAX is derived from, either so it might suck. Either way, neither has a UT99 export plugin. I think MAX 4 or so had one but GMAX isn't compatible with MAX plugins. Your only hope is Milkshape.

Find any tutorial about modeling in general. Learn a basic none program specific workflow, pick an app (stick thread above), and simply import any of your work into Milkshape for converting. Avoid Gmax.
