modelling for HL2 | BLOCKED

I really hoped to be posting here more often since discovering this glorious game but I have one major block to my development: softimage|xsi for HL2 doesn't work for computers with 1400 x 900 screen res. It actually won't load. Which sucks major ass
My laptop is a real powerhouse and I now use it as a desktop replacement, but thanks to the short sightedness of softimage I can't model anything!!

there's importers/exporters for max and maya, i managed to get a gun into hl2, but never bothered to align it correctly, dunno about characters though

Why not downgrade your screen rez to work in XSI?

Dekard: Depends on the laptop screen, but that might look really ass. Some laptops - LCD screens I think - scale the lower resolutions to fit in the screen size... resulting in doubled and blurred pixels.
It is a bit silly that software won't actually work AT ALL in certain resolutions... is there any good reason for it?

There's a 1400x900 layout over on XSIBase, whether that works with the modtool version or not, I have no idea.

That sucks dude. I think XSI was designed for a resolution of 1280x1024, which is the screensize i bought before purchasing XSI. I used a 1024x768 layout before that while learning EXP for HL2, but it was really crowded. You're using a widescreen laptop, so maybe try one of the layouts from this link that are closest to your resolution. Not sure if they're all compatible. Also, if you can change your resolution to one of these without it looking ass, that may work. Or, you can make your own layout. Not sure how that works, but give it a try.

And like Marine says, there are plugins for Max. You'll just have to settle with terrible animation tools.

Bad XSI? Bah, bad laptop company. Who the hell ever heard of 1400x900? Where do you get wallpaper for that?!

It could be a widescreen or HD laptop. The screen resolutions on those can be weird sometimes.

Why don't you just use max or for that matter Silo !! It does not matter what you use there is conversion software out there for all the programs !! From what I read there is no distinct advantage to using XSI other then a direct exporter plug-in.

Well I'm a max vet so I guess I'll be slogging away with that. Shame really. 1400x900 is a pretty standard widescreen rez for LCD btw (those who are bemused) but XSI freaks out. running a lower rez would mess up my aspect ratio on both the screen and my wacom... I'd end up modelling skinny giants!!
