Some concept paintings I did over the weekend. I'm roughing out details for the next model I plan to make, which is very loosely inspired and influenced by David lynch's Dune Baron.
I'm not really interested in the books I just enjoy the idea of a flying fatman, hovering around in doom3.

Those are some pretty great looking pictures. I'm really likeing the little arms at his sides. Which is also kind of funny because you mention how you're not interested in the books, when in one of the books someone eventually uses little robotic arms because his arms eventually grow useless.
With that said, I think you should make his limbs less capable looking, I mean he looks as if he'd have no problem walking about if he wanted. I think he should look as if he needed the suit or else he'd be immobile. Just a suggestion.
I can't wait to see it's transition into 3d.
oh, so he isn't supposed to be the red baron, ok nm.

Agreed. I like the second one the best. But I do love the tubes coming from the mouth in the first. you should intigrate that element into the second. Really great stuff here. Cant wait to see the model.
great work spacemonkey, loads of character in your designs, I love
great design. all those details will look awesome normal mapped
Cheers for the headups gauss, if anyone else has links to relevant subject matter/obese people they would be apprecaited.
Neo_God I have never read the books - only seen Lynch's film, hah I got the idea for his robotic arms from Futurama. ;D
At the moment I am trying to rough out all my main shapes in basic 3d. After that I am going to replace each 'temporary' piece with a fully detailed part later. I think its important to get all the shapes right and I do have a habit of changing things on the fly.. which is fine with a low poly model but obviously a high poly model needs more planning.
Anyone else worked like this with high poly stuff? I am in the dark on this and trying to find a work flow that will allow me a certain flexibility, aswell as acheiving good results. I havent done any serious high poly before and I have to admit it is damn fun! ;P
Im not sure about the overall shape of the top of his head. It feels a little square? And in the face, I think the folds that come down from the corners of his mouth are a little severe, or come down too far Im not sure. Either way, they make him look like a ventriliquist's dummy with a seperate mouth piece If you know what I mean? Perhaps that was your intention though?
Cheers Daz, the folds around his mouth were too deep, so I have done a quick fix. The top of his head is a little square.. its something I will be fixing.
A few more pics, a quick test paint and some grabs of the mesh.
If you really wanna make it gross, make his fat folds assymetrical. Like have one edge of the stomach hanging lower than the other. Whenever I see the picture of the buttertroll on the internet, thats one of the parts that grosses me out the most.
p.s. google buttertroll.
Poop I will be working in some assymetry, you know how it is... just so easy to slap a symmetry modfier on the stack and pretend I did twice as much work.;) I couldnt find any pics of the buttertroll.. ;(
finish that and normal map it !!!
That is one fat and sexy harkonnen!
Just remember AI is the devil in the universe of dune, so he shouldnt have anything that he doesn't control directly.
Great stuff man! Though I think you should add little dimples on his hand where his knuckles are.
here r 2 points you might want to consider:
his thumb is missing a bone, it looks like he only has 3 (starting from the wrist). fat fat, but the hand anatomy should be more visible, especially if u wish to give him a more powerful (physically) feel.
his feet seem equally over mushy
second thing, if u look at his head proper, like his actual skull strcuture, it looks proportionally small. the fat rings around it make it seem bigger and create a feeling its okay. look at it straight chin to to the top of his (really high) sculp, it seems to me too small. consequencially, the ear falls of too far behind.
its a tricky thing, i may be wrong here.. but give it a second
Is he going to be flying or carried by something? Or is there another reason why you modelled his feet hanging down?
Got a few fixeds todo, the skull size is definately going to get checked over. Thanks guys.
The knuckles still bother me, I think they should be more concave.
Damn, this is just great stuff though! I'm Glad you updated!
thats wicked I agree with Neo on the nuckles. they seem a little funky. the feet look like they could go for some more geometry, getting some funky faces/pinching in there.
and those stitches!! you're insane!
However, I do have a comment. Depending on how thick a material his suit is made of you may want to consider showing the cellulite that he'd have. Generally large people like that - when wearing tight clothing - have the cellulite showing through in that it dimples the material.
I really like the design take on him. at the moment my only complaint would be that his weight is cleary seen but you cant "feel" it really. I would bend the spine a bit down so that you can see that hes floating all the time nearly no movement. He should look a bit more broken und exhausted (no matter how lazy you are your body must "move" to be in good condition). Generally i think the flesh should hang are down a bit more. But beside that he looks really "wow". Very awesome. Cant wait to see him normalmapped and textured.
oh, no, it's just you!
keep it up!
