I did a little work for the Major once, for free. I also participated in a contest he hosted (with Ryno and Malengine) and we won, and I got some software. But the real payoff was the Major getting me in touch with Zombie, which led to a series of nice lucrative gigs. In this industry it's often about who you know, and Major Pixel knows everyone in this town. I owe him in a big way, and I bet lots of other people do, too.

Yeah, Major Pixel is alright. Full of BS, but generally a good guy with a lot of connections. But he knows that he's full of BS, and knows that YOU know he's full of BS, so no harm, no foul. He's usually pretty honest, but does bait people a bit, with the "If we make some money, I'll be sure to send some to the troops" bit. Still, I've done free work for him for fun, and I've done paid work for him, and was paid. It's those in-between jobs that seem to get people worked up, but Pixel is usually up front about the fact that there is nothing guaranteed money-wise, so people shouldn't read into it. Even in these cases, if you've got time to kill, a portfolio to develop, and contacts to be made, it's not such a bad thing. Pixel usually kicks in for some Pizza at least, and you are guaranteed to make contacts.
