Here's where I'm at so far.
Whats right, whats wrong?
No, thats not the final proportions of the uv map. I know, make unimportant, hardly visible areas, smaller.
To me it looks good. You did a good job of avoiding stretching. The only problem I see now is all the blank space on your unwrapped image. The messes should be tightly together to avoid all that wasted space.
This is nowhere near the final map yet. I'll make sure to pack it together when it's done tho. I'm having trouble with the cylindrical area underneath and to the back of it. I don't know if its worth the space to have those flat faces of that area paintable.
It's not bad, but it looks like some parts could be rearranged differently to fit better and maybe allow you to make all the pieces bigger and give you more room to paint. Don't be afraid to rotate and flip parts to make them fit better. Think of it like a puzzle.
I think you should distribute those rectangle parts at the top into the spaces like the left down corner(thre are more of them). Then you can scale the whole thing up a little more.

How's this?
But this is only the cockpit area. Think I'll have to do the rear as another texture map?
