well, today i really felt like listening to some new music... so i wanted to ask you guys what are some of your favorite bands.. although metal is my favorite kind of music, im open to all suggestions, because i listen to pretty much anything
thanks!!!
Replies
Racer X: Paul Gilbert's old band, recently reformed - kinda classic/hard rock style with blistering guitar solos, some cool riffs and pretty straightforward songs. If you like them, try also Impellitteri and Edguy.
Porcupine Tree: I can't really classify this band, they'll do everything from soft rock to almost techno via a metal and progressive route. Very interesting stuff.
Dream Theater: In my opinion one of the best bands around. Maybe a bit cheesy for some people's taste at times, but the band members are all insanely skilled, they have some killer metal riffs and ridiculously good instrumental sections. Check out their newest album, Train of Thought, since it's kinda more "accessible" than their older stuff. Although 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence is an awesome (2CD) album.
Shadows Fall: Nicely heavy metal stuff with blazing guitar solos and (oddly enough) a very good cover of Welcome To The Machine. Shouty vocals, weird tunings and heaviness abound. Plus the lead singer has 5-foot-long dreadlocks.
Riverside: Kinda in the same vein as Porcupine Tree, lighter progressive rock stuff, good to listen to in a "chill rock" way.
Alter Bridge: Fairly straight-up modern rock, decent vocals and songs you can sing along to. If you like these guys, check out Breed 77 too.
Devin Townsend: Anything from his own named albums, I wouldn't really recommend Strapping Young Lad, it's a bit boringly metal (repetetive). Terria and Accelerated Evolution are great albums though, kinda experimental metal with a bit of lighter stuff thrown in here and there.
Span: Norwegian rock group, very cool stuff, it's pretty predictable music but they have a great selection of songs that are sing-along goodness level.
The Darkness: Ahahaha. Fun.
Thrice: Nice punky kinda metal. Riffs which sound like Iron Maiden throwbacks. Catchy songs now and then.
At The Drive-In: Now-defunct crazy experimental rockers. They did some really weird shit, I don't like their older albums as much but Relationship of Command and in/Casino/out were very good listening. Now split up but the singer and guitarist formed The Mars Volta, who are pretty cool (I saw them live, thought they were shit, then heard their album and it's grown on me. I now quite like them!). If you like this, also check out a band called Thursday.
A few bands you probably won't have heard of (and might have trouble finding their albums) are FULC, Vex Red, and Million Dead - they're kinda underground UK rock/metal groups who I find very refreshing and interesting.
Yeah. I figure any other suggestions I might make you'd either laugh at or will already have (Rush, System of a Down, Matthew Good [+band], Silverchair, Placebo, Queens of the Stone Age).

Sweden has some nice groups that keep metal alive. I like more talent, and less pop influences. I'm also a fan of chronixradio when they're not playing Slipknot or Mushroomhead.
Burning beaten Llamas - If you haven't heard them, slit your wrists right now. they are that good.
Plowed snowpeas - My current favorate, the lead guitarist just must eat awesome for breakfast. If you like Opeth, you will like these guys.
Stiff Little Fingers
Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards
To Laugh at MoP for liking FULC. HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA.

Ha! I'll say Pea! The Postal Serivce? I don't even think they use guitars, to me, that's sort of a mandatory thing for metal.
Though you did list Katatonia, and they kick loads of ass.

Wow, that takes me back. I had their "Images and Words" cd way back when, back when metal ment hairspray and power ballads. They're still around? I'll have to check out their newer stuff. Thanks for the reminder of a great band.
Another band in the same category (to me at least), would be Savatage. Don't know if they're around any more though.
Bort: I don't think I've ever heard of Bloodstock. I know about FULC because a friend of mine used to live in the same house as the singer and guitarist. I've got their album, it's not amazing but it's got some pretty good stuff on it.
At least I don't listen to bands with names that sound like a dying camel clearing it's throat, nor would I trust a band whose homepage is hosted on Geocities
That DragonForce band sound pretty funny, definitely cliched beyond belief, and the guitar solos are waaaay abusive of whammy pedal pitch shifting effects. Personally I prefer Luca Turilli :P
Soilwork: all their shit is great. cant pass them up. These guys will NEVER get old to me, i love them. ElysiumGX knows whats up.
Children of Bodom (thanks soul!!!!): fucking great music.
Cradle of Filth
Skinlab: dont get their live cd, it fucking blows.
Stuck Mojo: pre90's funk-rap-goove-southern jive metal. If you're looking for heavy, get Pigwalk. Rising is good a little popy, as is Declaration of a Headhunter. Their first, Snappin' Necks is very 'rappy.
The Darkest Hour: yes!
Katatonia (not the first album... for the love of god. "Viva Emptiness" all the way)
...And Oceans: I bought, "this love, is muderous" souly because my friend's stripper girlfriend danced to it. It is pretty rad.
Lamb of God: their latest is a little weak, a bit "too political" for my tastes, seemed like they were trying too hard.
As I lay Dying: is good, although sometimes annoying
Bleeding Through: Buddy of mine turned me on to them, they use a Boondock Saints sample, they are ok
Deicide: cant go wrong with em
Nothing Face: a little different, but great shit
Mindles Self Indulgence: OMG these guys fucking rock. Not really 'metal,' i dont think you can classify them. really GREAT stuff though. brilliant.
The Left Rights: hillarious album, 2 of the dudes from Mindless.
Pissing Razors: yes.
Pro-Pain: tons of groove.
Puya: fucking BADASS!!!!!!!!!! Spanish!!! rrraaaawwwr jam, one of the better metal acts of today... although i dont think they are still playing.
Raunchy: grrove city
Testament: YES
Vision of Disorder: earlier stuff is good, later stuff is shit.
Arch Enemy: brutal, great.
Atreyu: pretty good, but annoying at times.
Bloodhound Gang: must have. hillarious, not metal, but fucking priceless shit.
Down: "black jazz" phill from pantera, some dudes from corrosion of conformity (pepper, one other... memory fades). awesome music.
meshuggah: dont know what to say about them, just "headache," or "brilliant writing," or "fucking wow." crazy sweedes.
N17: not the Greek Terrorist group, a highly under-appreciated Texas metal act. Ive only found 2 albums, but they are WELL worth your time. If you can find any of their stuff, BUY IT (Defy Everything, Trust No One). ROCK.
and for the EXTREMELY non-metal:
Oysterhead: Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool, Stewart Copeland, in the coolest Jam band type thing evar. Very bizzare, musical, and sometimes very 'hippie.' "Shadow of Man" is the coolest song ever.
Ayreon
Only ones i could think of that has not yet been posted
And hey, it's never bad to listen to some other styles of music.
@moose: I believe Soilwork just finished recording their next album. Can't wait for release.

another one i missed last night:
Apex Theory: a little poppy, but most of their songs have an awesome groove to them.
Am i outta touch or what
[/ QUOTE ]
no, its the children who are wrong
haha, couldnt resist
Nostradamus: I was gonna mention Ayreon, but decided against it, possibly too cheesy sometimes definitely great stuff though, I own all the Ayreon albums.

Oooh I like your taste! Opeth is the shit!
Ans lo and behold.. it appears windowpane is also your favorite Opeth sing
I've heard of or listen to a lot of these, but I found some good ones that I've never listened to before
And I have to agree with moose and elysium, soilwork fucking rocks ass.
Elysium : you don't like Slipknot? IMO, they are an awesome band. They are one of the few bands to me that sticks out, and gains my respect, especially with their latest album. Their lyrics are really good, and their instrumentals are excellent. I understand that some people don't like them because of some of their diversity, but I think that just shows they have strengths in different styles too.
way to miss the point completely on that one, heh.
Slipknot aren't diverse unless they jump on the bandwagon, thinking: if it worked for corey, let's try and do it with Slipknot.
Then again, if you like them, i can only disagree, but as long as you enjoy it.
If you look at my "most played tracks" list, Windowpane is down at 15 plays while songs like The Funeral Portrait are up at 35. Mind you, I was learning and re-recording that one on guitar, so it kinda explains that
Windowpane is a great song though!
"because of some of their diversity"
way to miss the point completely on that one, heh.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but you're saying being diverse is copying? If they stuck to one style, I'm sure I'd still like them... did you ever think maybe they wanted to make different kinds of songs, instead of just trying to make the most money? It's a possibility...
If you compare mfkr to their first cd, you see that all the quirky bits (that i liked!) are gone, and instead only the nu-metal stayed. then they tried to be 'true metal' with Iowa, which i thought was a shoddy cd just as much as the first, and now, blergh...
i just don't like them, okay?
i try to listen to alot of music, but Slipknot is not something i can listen to. personal preferences.
Somethings about opinions and arseholes, something in french about discussing colours and tastes, etc...
the end.
edit: actually, i seem to come off a bit like a bastard there. i respect your opinion and all that, but that's the way i see it, allthough i may have put it nicer.
I don't know, i thought myself english, and always seem to come off a bit angry when i post
edit2: also, if you liked the quirky funky bits on fmkr, check out ephel duath and farmakon.
REALLY the end.
The new labum by Exodus, Tempo Of The Damned is also extremely brutal. Those guys got really pissed off then wrote an entire record about it.
For something a little different, check out Nightwish, an operatic metal band. Similarly, Apocalyptica are well worth a listen. Best way to describe them? Heavy classical.
Nevermore embody the direction metal should have taken instead of nu-metal. Extremely intelligent, progressive metal at its finest.
Finally, a band called Brainstorm are pretty awesome.
Lamb of God was MUCH better when they were Burn The Priest. Their label made them change the name, among other things. When they signed, it would seem the teeth were extracted from the barracuda...
Another band I highly recommend that I left off of my list is Coelesce(sp?)
Scissorfight is another one that I had forgotten. Great stuff. "Mountain man, mountain man, running through the woods with his dick in his hand", hahahhaa.
Nightwish is really one in a million(I'd compare them to Therion rather than Apocalyptica), they just put a new album out this year, I think they launched their US Tour when it came out. I was going to see them in August but crap came up, and I missed the show.
They've mentioned The Dillinger Escape Plan, whose best cd by far is the one with Patton anyway: "irony is a dead scene"
and OOOH nevermore. i fucking love Nevermore, but i hate their latest cd... it's a turd compared to dead heart.
Comparing nightwish to apocalyptica really is very, very wrong, soul reaper
That's like saying the Beatles really where just the same as the monkees.
edit: does anyone have any bootlegs of the shows patton did with Rahzel? i'd like to taunt my patton/rahzel-fan friends with it, all the while rubbing in how i saw them at the festival they thought was "rubbish" because it had no decent artists. heh.
If you like noisy 80ies synths with Mike, check Kaada & Patton out!
Also, no one has mentioned CARCASS yet. Best death/gore/grind/melodic metal band ever.
and i'm surprised you can mention gore/grind in the same sentense as melodic.
